My XDM-40 3.8 has fired 500 rounds without a failure.

Make sure to remind him that the stuff on guns from the factory is not lubricant, its a preservative. There is a difference.,

I have a SR9 that I've never had a single issue with. I've shot about 1000 rounds and only ever field stripped it. The first time my buddy shot it, it immediately FTE twice with the same mag. I think he was not holding it firmly enough but after that one incident no more problems. Let us know what you find.

Would you say CLP Breakfree is a lubricant, preservative or a cleaner - it says it is all three on the bottle?

Is there anything else that will work better than Breakfree or Hoppes to lubricate a relatively new pistol (~1,500 rounds) being used in IDPA and Steel Challenge shooting?

Thanks!

I've heard more than one gunsmith call it a great source of business.

I had no issues for about 800 rounds since new, then out of the blue it started. Very frustrating. Same ammo, similar conditions, maybe a little colder. All I did was remove the mag safety.

I am shooting this weekend and will concentrate on the grip and provide feedback.

... as in, it does not lubricate well, or destroys the metal / plastic?

I think "lubricant" and "cleaner" shouldn't be in the same product label (unless we're talking ashless dispersants) though I have used hoppes in the past, but I think clp is too thin to be an effective lubricant.

My personal favorite right now is mobil1 synth.

I use it on the inside on the barrel after I have cleaned it thoroughly as a preservative and I carry it in my gun bag for down and dirty cleaning in the field. It doesn't really do a great job at any of the 3, but it is handier to carry than 3 bottles. When you get the time to do a thorough cleaning, use a seperate powder solvent, copper solvent, oil and lube in the appropriate order and areas.

This.

CLP isnt terrible stuff, it's great for quick and inthorough cleaning, but as stated above, it doesn't do any one thing perfectly.

I use it mostly as a cleaner.
