Yes, it is a Kimber. The Solo is their pocket 9mm.

Sent from the voices in my head and transcribed by their drinking buddy...

By the lock I can tell it's a new one, but do you know if any of the old ones were case hardened when they left the factory?

Some of the S&Ws of that era might have had color-case-hardened triggers and hammers, but none of them had a color-case-hardened frames. Mine is a modern one, and it is a sweet shooter.

Nothing wrong with that. I have an old WWII 1911 that has a Colt frame and a Remington slide and is beat to hell and rattles. But it's dead reliable and accurate enough for practical use. It was a philosophical statement that states that a self defense weapon shouldn't be selected on the basis of price rather than what will do the job best. When I'm selecting something to defend myself with, cost is the least of my concerns.

An Escort and a BMW will get you transportation. One is just more options and attention to details. I went with an Ed Brown but was looking at Kimbers when I first started looking at 1911's. Semi customs you start paying for hand fitting.

It's kind of like cars. One person gooses the throttle on a Toyota and mass hysteria ensues, and suddenly Toyotas are crap. I bought my Solo after the complaints from a few were rampant on the internet. Every time somebody saw my Solo at the range, they'd come look and say "heard they gotta lot of problems with these!" Then they would shoot mine, find it functioning perfectly, and shutup.

Now, that being said, operate it within the manufacturers recommendations. If you've handled one of these, look at the chamber clearance when the slide is locked to the rear. It is the tightest I've ever seen on a pistol. This thing was meant to shoot heavy high performance ammo with consistent pressures. Throw range ammo in it, and it will get pissed off. I still don't understand why guys buy $900 handguns for self defense and practice with $9 a box steel cased ammo.

I saw that Kimber Solo at a shop. It really felt great in my hand. I'd love to be able to shoot one.

I don't think anyone is showing off. It's simply personal preference. Purchase what you like and can afford.

Mike

What I think is funny is that you couldn't even find one last year. Most gun stores were selling their pre-orders over a year after release.

Now the apocalypse has come, and I've seen these sitting in the cases at several Kimber dealers. Guess they are the wrong color.
