It's probably a KMW Longsword. The stock is mfg'ed by McMillan for KMW.

The scope looks similar to a US Optics ER-25 5-25X. It doesn't look like a S&B, Leo, Nightforce...

It started the Monday after Newtown...

That's when everything went nuts. For example, Brownells sold over 30k AR magazines that week. More than they had sold in the past 8 months combined.

You have to be 18 or 21 to buy ammo. So technically yes you might need an ID.

I have slowed down dramatically on my shooting since

Will still shoot the F-Class matches through the summer but practicing less since I can't get more powder and match bullets.

Varmint season will be less although I have enough for this year but not next.

USPSA/IDPA/SASS MUCH MUCH less. I have bullets and brass but can't replenish powder and primers any more. And I want to conserve a little.

I guess you are trying to be political, and actually mean Jan 20th? Oh, and also mean 2017?

I'm thinking we might devolve to simply posting pics of ammo. Everyone will start drooling over a box of .22!

The carbine model comes with a 16" barrel, which I believe is within legal limits in all 50 states, plus Canada (?). For some reason, I really dig the idea of including it as a permanent piece of kit on my bike. If I could rig up some sort of locking scabbard to mount to my KLR, can anyone come up with a solid reason NOT to do it?

My main concern would be thievery, of course. Assuming I could figure out some way to secure it with a keyed lock, or otherwise make it kind of incognito, what else could go wrong? I'm not looking to be convinced one way or the other, and realistically it probably won't happen. I'm just wondering if it COULD without causing more trouble than it's worth.
The 16" is legal in Canada as long as that is the barrel that came on the rifle from the manufacturer. You can't have the barrel shortened to that length from a longer barrel. In the USA it is legal period although most rifles with a barrel that short have at least a 16.25" barrel - probably just in case some gungho LEO gets too futzy with a tape measure.

For carrying on a motorcycle, I would consider having a take-down conversion done.

Although it is probably cheaper to buy them that way (you can buy some like that from the manufacturer).

As for some kind of hard case, I have often thought about getting some kydex and making my own for several of my rifles because I want one that is small (no longer than 27", no thicker than 3", thereby only slightly larger than the rifles, just enough to give them a hard case) and light, and I have yet to see a hard case that matches that description. Inside the kydex I would put a very thin layer of really dense foam rubber of some sort (i've seen it around, don't know what it is called) - denser than dense neoprene - about the density of a recoil pad on a rifle.

The kydex would just be a non-descript box of two halves, one around the other (the smaller fitting inside the larger), not fastened together, but rather with straps or something around to keep the halves together.

The idea being the hard case would prevent the contents from damage. It would not be water tight as that isn't a concern for me - it was I could wrap the rifle in a plastic bag of some sort.

That's nice but for fuckssake just take the stock

off a normal lever action. It's only a couple of screws.
