Personally I don't fancy myself a collector, although I do keep all my boxes.
I think there is a difference (possibly slight) between a collector and an investor,

although, the rise in value of baseball cards in the mid-80s made every collector fancy themselves and investor.

I'd say a collector is someone who buys something purely to own it. An investor buys something with the belief that it will appreciate in value. Some people do both, some do neither.

Perhaps investor should be called "speculator."

That's pretty right on, although I keep my boxes and manuals, and the trigger locks etc. because when I go to sell it I show the potential buyer the complete thing, I don't even use the supplied cleaning kit, shooting goggles etc. Because 1, I have coated cleaning rods and good shooting glasses etc. and 2, when I go to sell those things are in the case where they would have been when purchased.

I would call myself an enthusiast, not expecting the guns to pay for themselves, but I think it is easier to sell a gun for what you ask when its complete. And I feel justified asking top dollar for it, because I know the other ones for sale probably are just a gun in a snap shut case.

Its getting seriously hard to store the cardboard boxes though. Even folded flat is getting a bit full.

I bought a couple of handguns this last weekend,

when I got home, my wife said "oh good, more gun boxes."

(Of course, this was just for the plastic handgun boxes.)
