Even my all steel TC Contender barrel barely gets warm after putting a whole box of .22 ammo through it. I assume he made the receiver so long because it also functions as a handle when the gun is converted into a fishing rod, otherwise it could be much shorter and lighter than it is. If it were not for that, he could also have eliminated the grip tube entirely and bent the rod he uses as a stock to function as a handle.
He made it about as short as a non-SBR rifle barrel can legally be in the USA; no less than 16" and I don't think I would want it any shorter even if it was legal.

I do agree that some of the design seems to be due to the fishing rod conversion, which isn't a bad idea at all. A lot of people would not mind having both in one mechanism.

Yeah, that is why I went with this:

instead of this:

I think the sweet spot (or best compromise) for a magnum 'field' gun is 4 to 5 inches. Shorter than that and you don't gain much in compactness or lighter weight because of the grip length, and you get even more blast and muzzle flip, and you lose even more velocity.

I used to carry a six inch Dan Wesson in blued steel, and then a SS Taurus M44 with a six inch barrel. Both were nice (the DW was very accurate, the Taurus was one of those rare ones with a butter smooth DA trigger), but they were big and heavy, mostly heavy.

Question Nagant Question

re: Mosin-Nagant - I know that some are very decent (reliable/accurate) and some can be had for a song (I've seen them stacked like cordwood at gunshows) ... my question is how can I pick out a good one - and what is a good price for one that I can shoot right away without any gunsmithing/repair?

A little spendy ($400) but consider this; if you can find an M6 Scout for sale consider buying it, if you can find one for $400 grab it! Also, I am betting this little gun (which is 3.5 pounds lighter than an M6) is probably more accurate than the M6, looks to take up much less space. There seems to be a way to convert it to a fishing pole too.

The website sucks. It has very little info. But still, very interesting little rifle that might be ideal for back-country motorcycling.

it is a 'twist open' reload single shot.

Made me own out of a 16" Cooey Ace that I got in a trade for a box of 12ga slugs. All told into it fer about $10 plus my own hacking around time on my Sherline with a scrap block of aluminium and some oak that was underfoot in the garage. Holds 12rds in the SS tubing stock. I've since painted it with black bedliner and fabbed a wee trigger guard and 50 feet of paracord wrapped around the stock.

Does it convert into a fishing pole?

Had

a 3 inch Smith 629 44 back in the day. It had a round butt with stock wood grips and was a pussy cat to shoot. No problem putting 50 rounds of full house loads through it a session. Could hit the 100 yd gong 1 out of 6 times. That Ruger looks even nicer. I'd buy one in a minute at that price.

In Canada, we have like... tree branches and shit. Or I guess, tie a string to the barrel, distract the fish with a shiny thing and shoot it in the face.

Fishing rod/gun combo.
That's the dumbest shit I ever heard.
Reminds me of the $10 Rambo knives when I was 12.

tony the tiger, nevermind. That SR'd do it. I've broke bad some SW 29's. I'd like a 30 oz 4" that would last. (edit.. meaning that yes, the Ruger wha?) Hey you up North.. I hear you.. no big whoop.

Wouldn't a Bullpup design based on a 10-22 and fluted target barrel be a pretty good option? Shorter OAL, longer barrel, better accuracy, and repeating action.

or a Marlin Papoose?

There are some bullpup conversions out there for a 10/22, but I haven't heard of any of them really being worth the money.

With a .22 you are wasting time going longer than a 16 inch. I believe a .22 does all it will do in about 12 inches of barrel, of course then you are in SBR territory.

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy in any round, as long as your twist rate and bullet weigth/length are matched up and allowing the bullet to stabilize before it exits the barrel. Barrel length only has to do with powder burn.

*Barrel diameter plays a role in accuracy. A larger diameter barrel is going to whip less (and heat up slower) causing the gun to be more consistent. The shortest, largest diameter barrel that you can work with for a given caliber with the correct twist rate, velocity and bullet combination is going to be the more consistent and thus more accurate.
