I wouldn't know why - Redhawks are fine guns from what I hear. I don't think Ruger makes too many revolvers that aren't decent.

This is perhaps a really noobish question, but what is the purpose of this style flash suppressor?

Anything that allows the compressed "flame front" to escape around the bullet before the end of the barrel could be called a "flash suppressor"

What else would the purpose be?

I mean, why would someone choose that over a typical birdcage style flash hider

It doubles as a flash hider and directs the noise away from the shooter. Very handy on a short barreled rifle.

Bought this about 10 months ago....Sig "mosquito", .22 LR, bi-tone version
Have put 1500 rnds through it.
Gotta say I love it. Cheap to shoot, nearly "full size."

Got the holster for christmas-

It initially was kinda picky with ammo, now a little less so. It "loves" the CCI mini- mag stuff.

Can't speak to this specific one but similar styles of "muzzle boosters" are used on some SBR's to increase the gas pressure pulse (over time) seen by the gas system, this helps make it more reliable. The most famous version of this would likely be the one used on "Krinkov" and AKS type weapons....

Don't know about that one in particular, but I've seen some that are billed "wire/rebar cutters".

That is Noveske's Flaming Pig. It's designed to be used with short barrel carbines. It's like the AK Krink, focusing the muzzle blast forward, making the gun more controllable like a brake. It's classified as a flash hider by the BATF but that's not it's main purpose as there is a huge fireball still.
