Here's my all time favorite .22 handgun, S&W 41. I bought this one in 1977 and have used it a lot over the past 33 years. I know they are expensive now.....they were back then too, but they just work and work, are easy to strip down for cleaning, have great triggers, and you can swap barrels in about 30 seconds if you're so inclined.

My dad bought one with the longer barrel and the muzzle-brake (not a big necessity on a .22) back soon after the model came on the market. I'm thinking he bought his around 1958-1960, I was a young boy at the time and remember shooting his during my high-school years on several occasions. He passed away a few years back and I have that one too, but can't find a pic of it. I'll have to take one and post it as the gun is one of the earliest 41s. I've not shot that one in decades, but it did inspire me to buy the above gun in '77, and I'd never part with either of them.

Thanks for all the unhelpful suggestions that I buy a different gun... Looks like Volquartsen makes a sear for less than $30 that would probably do a good job.

rimfirecentral.com has nice illustrated instructions on improving many items on the Rugers.

Truckin'Thumper loves his M&P, it's his EDC piece.

I've got 2200 rds thru my XD without a single failure. Lots of different ammoes too. Cheapie reloads all the way up to Speer Gold Dot.
My buddy Joey has over 3k with the same experiences.
My cousin the FWPD cop has had a couple with no trouble (they carry Glock's now on the force).

My suggestion is to shoot em back to back and make your gut decision. Hard to go wrong either way IMO.

I've had the XD in .45 and I have an M&P .45 currently. Both are reliable as bowling balls. The M&P has a better trigger and feels better to me. My only gripe about the M&P is the 10 round magazines (vs more for other polymer pistols). That is the price to be paid for the small grip....
