Nothing wrong with oil, but WHERE ARE THE AIRHEADS?
OK, I've had four airheads, one K and one oilhead. Now I'm back to airheads and a 1993 R100GS. I love this site, but do you ever get the feeling that those oilhead guys seem to run this place?
Tell me, are there any dedicated airheads left out there? What gives? |

Get the pun.....I figured that the facination with increased lighting was the next level of compensation after buying the BIGGEST dual sport out there......hell, they all have some fancy metal boxes already don't they?

You forgot about the windshields...
Airheads are very, very cool. The comment about the GS being the biggest Dual Sport had me chuckling after riding a bunch of gravel roads in Utah last week... 2 people, fully loaded bags, figured the GVW was at least 1000lbs, on two leetle weensee tires... Not exactly confidence inspiring. Told my wife that it felt as stable as riding two 300lb dirt bikes at same time... Maybe it'd help if I ran more lights... Joking aside, the airhead GSs are bitchin. Never ridden one, but have a R75/5. It weighs in at around 400lbs I believe, feels like 800 when it's on it's side... are the first generation GS's any lighter? later bobc |

When all the 1200GS posts started pouring in, I started thinking - why don't they split those guys off into their own world?
You guys have just made me see the other side of the fence about all my stupid oilhead questions! Guess I need an airhead and a 1200...so it'll all be good...(only kidding about that whole, 1200 thing - but I would LOVE an airhead...a big, nasty, dirty, HPN airhead...)

Several years ago I almost bought an airhead GS from a guy up in the hills here. Glad I didn't becuase my friend bought a /5 and an R100 from the guy and talk about an incompetent mechanic and thief... oh well... but the GS had flat slides and a lot of goodies on it, he wanted way too much money for it too... But I was OH so tempted. Can you still get the paralever parts that the airhead GS's are famous for going through? Is there an alternative now? Later model or aftermarket parts? BTW I salute jdiaz, when I dumped my GS in deep sand I couldn't get it vertical again without assistance. 600lbs felt like 1200, I couldn't get any traction in the sand with my feet... When I had to pick up the /5 it was basically lifting it uphill. Lifted it no prob, was just kidding about it feeling like 800lbs, the high center of gravity certainly makes the bike feel heavier than 400lbs. later! bobc |

Had an '89 R100GS and a 2002 R1150GS at the same time for a while. Ideally you would keep both as they both appeal in different ways. The '89 great for a couple of hours on country roads. However, with any serious mileage, speed or rides over 3 hours I'll take the oilhead. Both are fine for the kind of off-roading I do, but I dare say the airhead may go a few places the oilhead won't or you wouldn't attempt. In any case, if you want to jump or single-track you are on the wrong bike.
Sold the airhead, I don't have time for 2 bikes so I don't really miss it.... |
