OR Trail-sounds like a valve job is needed.the bike will use oil if used at highway speeds.Best form of diagnoses is a cylinder leak down test with a good quality (ex snap on) gauge.1/2 quart in 1000 miles of highway riding is ok.If you run highway-or open terrain desert stuff you can gear up-I have been running 15/47.I bought my xrr used and had to do a top end on it after 2 rides.You can do topend work with out removing the motor.Upon dissassembly I found exhaust valves not seating and worn intakes from dirt ingestion.The cylinder bore is chrome -if its not using much oil I would not touch it-depending on the results of a leak down test.I used Kibblewhite valves and have had no problems with mystery valve clearence changes.I had my cylinder rechromed and run a stock honda piston & rings.The honda pistons run a tighter clearence and use less oil than a forged piston.I do my own work and find the xrr easy to work on.I send out my machine shop work.Any good automotive machine shop should be able to install some new valves in these heads-parts are large.If you suspect you have a problem get it fixed+ 500 or so miles before baja.I have a bike shop by my house that does dyno runs for $20.He prints out a a/f ratio graph with the run.-if your bike is lean on top or at highway speeds its hard on the exhaust valves.

Brake pedal extender/extension

Hi, I need to increase the lenght of the brake pedal (not the total lenght but the surface where I push with my boot) Any suggestion to reach a good result ?

OLDXR - thanks for the input and good to have company on this one.

The bike was running rich on much of the trip since I went from sea level where it's jetted to 5,000 - 7000+ feet for most of the trip, and it did use more oil once it returned to sea level which would explain usage in last 150 miles of trip on slab (probably half of the oil use or 5ish ounces). I want it dialed well before hand for Baja. I suspect I can pull the head and have a look, then just take the head in for the new valves and related parts.

The tip is steel, might have to fabricate the mounting portion longer...

Good luck, Shibby! The whole thing is very doable (well, not that I've ever completed it myself), it's just tough to do that many miles in a week for someone who isn't a fast rider like myself. I think the roughest parts were the first 50 miles from the Utah border.


I don't know what the changes there are in the current route from how it ran a few years ago, but assuming it's the same I have an idea to suggest for the PPowell Ranger Station/Lochsa Lodge area.

Heading north to south, as you get down by the Missoula area where the route turns west and goes along the Lolo Motorway, there is an option to drop out down to Lochsa Lodge where they have small cabins to rent, camping sites (I think), a pretty good restaurant, a small convenience store and fuel.

If your schedule has you spending the night in that area, there is a camping spot a few miles up the paved road (Hwy 12). There is a huge clearing right off the side of the road, but it isn't noticable from the road. All you'll notice is a small dirt road, but as you turn off on that dirt road you'll immediately see the camp area to your left. The dirt road easily connects back with the TID route, so you don't even need to hit pavement again in the morning.

Thanks for the info!

I've yet to perfect (or get anywhere near good GPX files) for the trip. I got the tracks from some nice user on here, implemented all the challenge points, and will be going over and trying to put private / non state campgrounds along the way.

We're good to ride from morning till night day after day. We did this on the CDT for 2.5 weeks straight. We're not good at getting up early though. I believe this will be our biggest challenge. No only the 1430 miles offroad in a week, but we have to ride nearly that distance back to the trucks in a couple days!

Should be fun. No doubt filled with big ups and downs. If our bikes hold together, hopefully our minds and body will as well!

I'll probaby have a bit of a write-up about the trip no matter how it turns out.

Got the front wheel off my buddy last night. Will be doing final maintenance on the XRR early next week and packing. Pretty much just an oil change and tire install left to do. My items that need to be packed will be used this weekend as I'm going camping!

does anyone have a picture of the underside of the rocker cover for the xrr?

For some reason, I'm having a terrible time with this. Got an ungodly metallic clanking noise (just replaced crank), but it's definitely coming from the head. Another thing I noticed is my manual decompression lever on the rocker cover sits much much higher than it used to (so much so that the cable doesnt have enough adjustment. My left side exhaust rocker adjustment screw is also sitting much higher than the right to achieve the proper .008" clearance.

Something ain't right here, but I can't figure it out. the one way clutch on the auto-decompressor only spins one way. It seems to stay in place when the cam is rotated, but the auto-decompressor lobe doesnt seem to move much, up or down when I try and move it by hand.

Any ideas? I really feel it's a decompressor issue, somewhere. It's just bizzare that the manual lever is so far off...

I'm changing the water pump on my BRP today. I'll be using the Honda HP coolant as recommended by Honda. Is there any reason I shouldn't pour in a little water wetter along with the coolant (wear on seals, etc.)?

Stunt,

There is a lot of free play in the decomp lever as normal.
I have heard of them jamming / seizing a little and not returning to the normal
position.
There is a return spring on the decomp too, check to see if it is not broken.

The loud clunk can be the auto decomp working if your idle is set to low,
clunk then stall normally.

The play on the camshaft is normal.
