Choosing Between 2 R's

Curious about your opinions on this. Two bikes with in a few hundred miles of each other for sale. Deciding between the following.

Bike 1:

2000 model, unknown mileage, good but not super strong runner.
Apparently uncorked but only drilled exhaust, tip not replaced. Unknown jetting, air box mods, if any.

Titled and little if any modifications from stock.

Needs new anti bottoming bumper on rear shock, new chain, sprockets.

Not known if CS seal or clutch bushing upgraded.
Asking $2300

Bike 2
2007 Model, low hours/miles (under 1000mi)
Completely stock, run from time to time but nothing else. Super clean sans some dust.
$3500

Have money for either, which one?

Engine rebuild

Anyone know if Barnum is still in business? I've got one of his 680 motors that needs to be "freshened up". Still runs good but has several thousand miles on it I'd guess. I've put 2500 miles on it myself, not sure how many the P.O. racked up. Any contact info would be appreciated, or someone familiar with his motor builds. The motor is stage 3? (all the goodies) I think, but dead reliable so far. I'd like to rebuild it the same. I bought the bike from XR king a couple of years ago, and it's never failed.(except the sticking float on the Eddy sometimes) thanks for any info.

I'd buy #2. Low mileage motor, nice pretty plastic etc. And try and get it for closer to $3000.

I spoke with Rob about six months ago. He had moved to Arizona.

I Agree with slogger. low mileage, less beaten on (7 years) and with it being all stock yet, you can pull out the corking parts and it will be like a brand new bike.

Ask him how much he enlarged the valves too, hopefully there is room for another cutting.

It cant be unless it was previously registered for the street. Does it have a CA license plate?

I do know they changed the laws in CA making it pretty much impossible to register a dirt bike for the street.

Agreed...I'm helping a buddy pull the trigger on his first R.

I bought an 07 with low hours as well. Love it.

Thanks for the comments...

I just bought one of his ex racers 2 weeks ago and we talk quite often. He is in Phoenix now and does not have his business going but I am sure he would be more than willing to help you out. PM me if you need some info.

Pissed BRP not starting after Rebuilds

Good day all! I am new to the ADVrider.

I need some help and brainpower!

I finally finished the top end rebuild (Took me 4 Months! Saving money buying stuff, saving money buying stuff ordering stuff from Honda 3 weeks delivery time!!!!):
New Valves
Hot cam stage one( new cam chain sprockets, cam chain, rocker shaft, rocker arms).
Piston rings

Now she does not want to start!!!
It was about 20degrees C last night at 19:00 at 900m above sea level.
Fully uncorked (with custom free flow insert into stock exhaust box).
Stock carb. (serviced new needle and seat, new jets)
175main.( same as before rebuild).
68S pilot.( changed from 65S in rebuild).
Bat wing in airbox same as before rebuild.
Springy flap removed from choke plate in rebuild.
The bike almost started first kick then she flooded, I think.

Kick kick KICK KICK Kick !!!!! rest, take a walk KICK KICK……Breathe relax, good mechanics do not stress, Calm ones think and analyse! Focus.
Fiddle with fuel screw: tried 1.5 turns out then 2 then 1 nothing.

22:00 go to sleep.

She almost started with throttle at ¼ open (sure sign of too much fuel), I was a little hesitant to try WOT, due to hot cam not having auto decomp).

So here is the plan:
Change pilot back to 65 S.
Change main to from 175 to 172. ( It heats up to 37 degrees C here in day time) and I think the hot Cam adds one size to main jet?…) Luckily I have the ordered the 172 just in case.
Finish cut-out of side panel. Only did the top triangle.
New air filter.
(I need to check float level as well, Small drops of gas is coming out of carb overflow pipe as when trying to start her, the float needle got stuck on first filling, I had to tap carb lightly with back of screwdriver to get it unstuck. But now she seems to be ok.

What do you guys think? Any Suggestions? Oh does anyone know what the factory idle screw setting is? Want to make sure I did not mess with it during carb clean.

I triple checked timing and valve clearances. So I am 90 percent sure its not that. ‘Cause she almost started on first kick after rebuild… So I know there is spark and fuel. It’s the air that concerns me. I checked tension on decomp lever as well.
I have put about 52 000km on her before rebuild, thus I should be ok with starting procedure. i.e grabbing the front brake while starting.

I remember one time after I had the carb completely apart and struggled hardcore to start it. Ended up being idle screw being turned out way too far, even thigh it seemed right. Started at half throttle, the. I knew it was way off. That's all I got for you.
