My XR has been burning oil for a while but I went to check the oil today before getting ready for a ride tomorrow and the oil isn't on the dipstick. The problem is I filled it up just a couple of rides ago. Maybe 50 miles at the most. Needless to say im not going for that ride tomorrow.

I don't have the manual with me but im planning on pulling the engine apart and looking at the piston, rings, valve guides, and just a general look over everything else thats easy to get to. What else should I be looking at? Ive never pulled an engine apart before but I am mechanically inclined and shouldn't have a problem but I don't know the little things I should be looking for.

Thanks guys, Header.

A better way to ask the question is, did you check it shortly after running it for 5 minutes or so?

I would do a comprehensive compression test to start with. One time with no oil in the cylinder and a second time with a tablespoon of motor oil in spark plug hole. The results will indicate if it is valve guides or rings. How many miles on the ol' gal?

I thought it was 5-10 minutes. I check it at the end of a ride. Always in range!

SM wheels back on the XRR. Put close to 100 back country miles this morning. It was freezing, mid 20s.

Update for the XRR burning oil:

Compression test is good
Drained oil and there was no debirs
Down tube screen didn't have anything in it either
Checked the plug while I had it out, looked fine

Im going to ride it for a day like normal then check the oil again to see if its burned any, then tear it apart to look at the valve guides then start to move south from there or, if it hasn't burned any oil I think I might just keep running it and keep a very close eye on it to get an accurate idea of how fast it really is burning oil. I am hoping I messed up the oil reading or have ridden it much more than I remember (most likely but I know its still burning oil at a decent rate).

On to better news the new oversized rotor is finally worn in so I played with it a little today. Can you say one finger stoppies

I blew it, the motor that is. Had a pile up 4th gear wot, just drained the oil a thick magnetic sludge on the top magnetic plug, a bit of metal and more sludge on the lower, motor plug. Plus the coolant came out with the oil, they didn't mix it all happened to fast.

The ride of shame was no fun.

Lucky for me I have a spare motor, the stock one. But I need to flush the bike and put it in. So far I have blown up every Honda I have owned. 2 and 4 stroke.
