Eddie runs a small business that builds custom Triumph street bikes closely based on his Triumph racers of the '60s and '70s. Although he does do some restoration work, the bikes he builds have very modern componetry. Brakes by Brembo, cables by Motion Pro, and Works Performance shocks. The hand crafted motors come with Johnson cams, electronic ignition and all sort of trick bits housed in a C&J Frame. A Carbon fiber tank and body works keeps things light, and Maxxis tires provide the grip. As he said in the interview, "The only thing really vintage on them is the motor and the guy sitting on 'em."

For what it is worth...

I took a test ride on an '09 thruxton a few days ago. Filter the following review with the knowledge that I don't own any "modern" bikes, and the test ride did not include any craziness.

I liked the sound with the titanium Arrow exhaust that was fitted. Not loud, but not too quiet. Low speed handling was a little tight, which I expected with the narrow bars. The low bars were far more comfortable than the clip-ons I had sampled on an earlier model. The seat is firm, the pegs mildly rear-set, and the bike feels very narrow. I thought the shift lever was a bit low for me, but that would be easily adjusted.

Power was adequate. I did not make any runs up to redline, as the bike only had 260 mile on it. The power delivery was smooth, undramatic, refined. I expected more buzziness from the vertical twin, but this was as smooth if not smoother than my '82 BMW R00S. Braking was also adequate, though I think I'd explore stainless steel lines and/or a different pad compound to get a feel more like what I have on my BMW.

I liked the bike a lot. It would definitely be on the short list if I ever have to replace my BMW.

Agree totally.

Thanks to a dear pal, i've had the opportunity to spend
a good amount of time on both the Thruxton and Paul Smart.

It was in fact the deciding factor in me getting a SC1000S. (which
should arrive in a matter of weeks )

The
Thruxton is way less demanding ergonomic wise and lays down
smooth. tractable , generally unintimidating power.

I could not see the SC1000S as the only scoot in the garage as it tends to
to beat me up much pass the 200 mile mark. As a let's go out and play
hide and seek in the twisties, it is monkey fun... particularly
if it's running Termis.

Dragging this thread back out... I want to know what people think about which retro-styled bike has the most soul. What is soul when it comes to motorcycling? For me, it's the sound and feel of the motor; a sense of raw power and unrefined speed; a look that is indicative of a bike designed to be ridden, not pampered; and a badge on the tank that harkens back to legends of old.

What bike has the most "soul"? I got it from my BMW airhead, but not from my oilhead. I found it more on a rough and tumble Triumph Thunderbird than on a demo Bonnie. I wonder if a Duc Monster would trump the GT1000 I tried...

Am I looking for something that cannot be found anymore? Are these retro bikes too good?

Only time with a bike will really tell, friend. While one rider may get the most giggles from a Guzzi V7 Classic, to another a Bonnie is next thing to Heaven.

All I can offer, is to say that I truly enjoy my '07 GT-1000 'Lil Miss Duckie. She's as much a daily-driver as Colorado weather will allow, and has been a hoot for every mile ridden. She commutes, carves canyons - and even went for a lunch meet-up in Leadville with ADV-friends last summer, a 290-mile round-trip. She suits me very well, and she has for 10,074 miles so far.

How she'd impress you may well be another tale.

Maybe if you're going to go retro, you should go retro. Get an old Bonnie. Get an old Norton.

To answer question #1: Yes the Monster is a better motorcycle in every way including "soul" IMO. I had both but now only have the Monster for this reason.

To answer question #2 and #3: Depends what "too good" means to you. If poor fueling and terrible suspension take you back to a time when everything was great the GT could be for you. For me, after having many competent motorcycles the retro look was what I was after, not the complete feel of a motorcycle not working as it should. To each thier own however ......

+1!!

I've got a '09 Triumph scrambler and just sold my Ducati PS, it simply wasn't being rided. The scram handles well but need suspenion upgrades if you want to push the limits in the corner. Power/torque is very good and probably almost as fast as the Duc in the 0-85 mph range. The Duc had a better top end but how offen do you ride at over 85 mph?? Cost of ownership for the Scram is way less then the Duc (maint. & insurance).

If I want to go far, I take the FJR. (24,000 in 2 years)
If I want to get dirty, I take the KLR.(3,000 in 5 months)
If I want to go twisty or to the track, I take the Daytona675. (7500 in 1 year)
When I just want to go out far a relaxing cruise, around town or on the back roads it's the Scrambler for me. (1500 miles in 3 weeks!)

I've suprised some sport bike friends with the ability of the scram in the corners and the drive out of the corners. Torgue is a good thing and for me is more fun to play with then horsepower. !
