Hi!

I have a pig with tm40 carb and crf 450 forks etc. I plan on trying to get a Acerbis 22 liter tank. Does anyone know if the bigger tank will interfere with the crf forks?

Toss the xrl first gear, nx650 second gear and fmx650 fifth gear in along with a 628 kit and I think it would be one cracker of a xr600r. That is what I would (try) to do at least. I believe that it all should bolt together with the right supporting parts.

But with all that said I really liked my 85 xr6 and it was a blast stock. I'm sure you will have fun either way.

Im thinking somewhere inbetween the two. Probably wont pony up the money for a big bore, as I dont need crazy power and want to retain reliability (and I have an Aprilia SXV5.5 for big power fun).

Street legality isnt as much of an issue in NH, as we can register just about anything with 2 wheels, but a plated frame would be that much easier/better.

I already have the CR500 forks and Im working on a rear disc conversion, and the frame is already stripped down...might be easier to find a doner bike with a bad lower end and build off of that.

Not first hand knowledge but it most likely will. I have a 4.0 Clarke on my XR and I welded stops to the side of the frame. It's right below the wire harness keeper loop. See it? Just a small block of steel. Dry fit the forks and ground away until the forks got max turn without hitting the frame.

Yea, I see it - nicely done!
However I might buy one and test...

Would welding the frame need stripping it down totally (could engine and electrics be damaged otherwise)?

just disconnect the stator ground and coil ground at the frame and use ample wet newspaper...to cool down

if tig welding then just do it fast...

no need to strip down anything

just take off tank

cheers

You can leave everything connected but I'd pull the CDI just cause.

lil bit, but you can adjust the tank a little. and a little flex in the mounting points adds up to being able to go full lock.

like steve said. I'd add to pull the neg on the battery because why not, and place the welding ground as close to the area as possible and as always, amke sure you have a good connection. Helps keep the heat and the juice in a confined spot.

only difference I can think of is the two little shrek ears on the 600. My XRL doesn't have the stock fuel tank mounting points and hasn't for a while, so I don't remember what it looks like, but I think that's the only difference.

and in case you don' tknow, the 88 XR600R + and the 94 XR650L have the same parts, with a few exceptions. If it interests you, there's threads somewhere on the swappable parts. A cursory search should turn them up. There's some info over at thumpertalk as well.

The XR600 and XR650l have TOTALLY different gas tank mounting systems and a tank from one will not fit the other unless you find an aftermarket brand that makes one tank for both models.

Don't know about the Acerbis. There is a tank in the flea market currently for sale that does have both type of mounting points on one tank. Go look see.

Correction. There WAS one, It's gone.

ah, well it does. there's 3 different mounting positions for the front supports. Having had the tank on there since I got it, I can't say that there were 3 different supports however. I think the 650L,600R and maybe the 400?
