Al Mar Ultralight Hawk
I've been carrying this little beauty the last few weeks. Lightweight, 3" talon blade breathtakingly sharp right out of the box, Micarta scales, beautiful fit and finish, solid lock. Touches up really nicely with a couple of pulls through the ceramic sharpener. I've got my eye on another Al Mar EDC with cocobolo scales. Al Mar was a legend back in the day, and it's great to see his vision continues after he's gone.

I have one that I bought several years ago. Paid about $80 at a knife shop on Pier 39 in San Francisco. WH's prices have climbed considerably since then. They consider a $375 knife to be EDC. Here's mine: ![]() ![]()

Some really wonderful knives.. the lines of that WH are pretty nice.
I have about twelve untouched Al Mar's left and gave away about eight. Won them years ago shooting. They're engraved/personalized so I either give them away or don't use them.

Any one (but Smithy) know what file and wire tested means? I do!

Took electrodes to it's more delicate parts and raked a file across it's joints and it still wouldn't talk?

Not positive, but I think file testing is done after quenching to verify hardness has been achieved. |

Yeah - if a file, which is very hard, skates across the edge (instead of cutting), then the blade is hard. If it is pressed sideways against a wire or small diameter rod, the edge should deform slightly but return to straight - not crack or take a set.
It is an indication of proper heat treatment, and is common for most custom knifemakers to do - we just don't etch the blade with the "sizzle" most of the time.
