I used a diamond DMT stone to remove the nick but have put some irregular scratches in the hollow grind, and the beveled side is now getting into the hammon in places, which makes me sad - it was such a pretty thing before the ham-fisted round-eye screwed it up.

Anyone have any tips about restoring the very fine scratch pattern from the hollow-grinding wheel?

I also need to buy some finer stones to really put a proper edge back on it, my ceramic wet stones only go up to 3000.
Take it to Hida Tool in Berkeley (across from REI) and see what they say. They have all the water stones and the knowledge to fix it or tell you how. http://www.hidatool.com/

I spent some time today surfing the net looking for hints and tips on sharpening Japanese knives, and found this video which was very educational:

I was interested to see that the grinding wheel he uses to put the hollow grind in is easily 30" in diameter. It's also amazing that he does this completely freehand.

I managed to restore the scratch pattern in the hollow grind by using a rounded-end wood stick and a strip of 180-grit wet/dry sand paper. It's far from perfect, but the cosmetic damage is not as obvious as it was.

I also stopped by Japan Woodworker in Alameda and picked up a 5000 grit wetstone, which nicely compliments my 1000/3000 ceramic combination stone. I'm getting to be addicted to the stones, and this after 10 solid years as a DMT guy.

I re-polished the primary edge, and re-shaped the secondary edge. The advice is to tilt the heel of the blade up "2 coins worth" Of course, that's two *Japanese* coins, which are thicker than our coins. I opted to put a somewhat wider secondary bevel in hopes of creating a more durable edge. Now, the secondary bevel is the recommended 1mm wide, and is not quite as sharp as it was, but absolutely reasonable.

If I'm feeling extra ambitious, I may search for some reference on how to bring out the hammon again.

Thanks for everyones input.

time, eh, time.....oh yeah and time.

I have been trying to get the local techshop to allow for hourly badges instead of monthly membership, that way when I get some time I can go and not waste a months membership for 1 visit. My shop never got set back up after we moved house over 7 years ago (son is 7)

Anyway...no prices on the site, no gallery (few pictures only), no link to purchase and the k9knives site he talks about isn't working.

Wait and see I guess.

Pretty calm, don't worry.

But if you want to make fun of someone with a LMGTFY link, be ready for payback, especially when you're (kinda) wrong.

They're nice, but they are beasts. Since they're so danged thick there may be better choices for mundane tasks like, well, cutting stuff.

I'll probably have one some day, too. I keep eyeing a Bravo 1 when my Gameskeeper will do everything one of those will do. Eh, so what.
