I am so frustrated by this, I have a double adult HRD grand rally I tried to fit to a 2009 Kawasaki VN1700, for the life of me I can't get it 1850 or under.... bloody close but still over.

I think I will be selling the sidecar/chassis.... not happy jan!

Wide hacks

I'm thinking I'd be looking for a new rig if I was in Oz

How wide is too wide?

Just reading the thread and thinking...metric width of 1850mm is roughly six feet give or take.

Legal width of any vehicle here in the province of Ontario Canada is 108" or nine feet.

My Honda Ridgeline truck (which is not a large pickup truck here by any stretch of the imagination)
has a physical width of 77.8 inches, not including side mirrors or side step bars.

So looking at your law that six foot width is just a wee bit narrow and could be interesting
as to a comfortable to operate setup. (Bloody politicians, they ruin life for us all!)

As the OP is in the southern climes, it is now December 27, 2012 and we have a howling blizzard
of snow here at the west end of Lake Ontario (one of the five Great Lakes)about 35 miles west of Toronto
Ontario Canada..looks like the snowplows will be out in full force in an hour or so, it is now 01:31:00 Eastern
North American Standard Time.

Legal width is 1850mm, measured from the rider's footrest on the right hand side [naturally], not the handlebars.
Information supplied to Gnome [while @ the Sidecar Rally], from Shaun Kelly [Engineer] of Bathurst
Hope that helps, this is for NSW
Cheers

That changes it a bit. Mine was measured to the end of the handlebar.
Any others here understand the rules?
I am sure the WA inspection people don't as I know of 3 different outcomes with just the park brake.
Cheer, Bruce.

ADR as follows
6.5.2 The ‘Overall Width’ of an L-Group vehicle must be as follows :
6.5.2.1 In the case of a two wheel vehicle (LA or LC), the maximum width must not exceed 1,000 mm.
6.5.2.2 In the case of a three wheel vehicle (LB or LE) or a motor cycle with a side car (LD), the maximum width must not exceed 1,850 mm.

VSB 14, (vehicle standards bulletin 14, national code of practice)
The maximum width of the combination, including any load and equipment, must not exceed
1.85m.

Overall width I take to be from the outer most point to the outer most point?

If Sean Kelly (SRK) measures from the footpeg it might be worth a trip to Bathurst.

Checked mine - 1830 to the footpeg, 1860 to the outside of the handlebars. Close enough I think.
