Partridge in my Pear Tree? Who's keeping them in Crozet?
Hey you mooks,
Christmas Eve I found a red legged partridge strutting around in my front yard. I thought "Cool!" But two days later it's still hanging around. Not that I mind, but I'm afraid one of my hounds is going to wring it's little neck. It's relatively tame, as in I can get pretty close to it and it's eating corn and seeds I throw to it. I'm guessing it's been farm raised or is a pet or somebody's dumb idea for a Christmas present... Anybody know of anyone raising these near Crozet? It's a beautiful bird, wish I could post a pic but attachments still don't work... but it looks exactly like this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-legged_Partridge Weird huh? Could it be wild?

It's probably a "flyer" from a hunting preserve in the area.

They are very cool birds. Rather rare in central va. Most hunting preserves use chukkars and not the red legged partriges. Lots of upland hunters are buying birds today, and releasing them in order to have birds to hunt. Can't hardly find a covey of quail anymore.
Not sure where you are, but there are lots of folks who buy birds to release all over VA. |

Randy, are you seeing things again????
Cool, a partridge! We're lucky to see such a wide range of birds in this area, probably because of the Blue Ridge flyway. It's a major migration route for many thousands of birds. Here in the City, we see all kinds of "unusual" birds in our yard all the time. But, no partridges.

Crozet
Crozet eh?
I hope to move to the C-ville or Crozet area in about a month. Looks like you have a variety of bikes for whatever terrain you feel like riding. You will have to fill me in on what kind of off road riding is available in the nearby and surrounding (central va) area. I have always ridden on the road. Wish I had not sold the Hypermotard this summer and bought a 1098. The Hyper would have been perfect on the roads up there. I would like to learn to ride in the dirt and have no idea what to buy. The video on the Shenandoah 500 pumped me up. |

Hey Mark, I have pics to prove the sighting, but after a few days away I haven't seen him again. I'm afraid my next sighting might be a pile of feathers and I'll be wondering if one of my mutts got him or the hawk that's been hanging around...
@Alpinist, hang around and keep your ears open, there are rides to be joined year round. We'll be glad to show you some off road adventure... In the meantime fill out your profile so we can know how best to ridicule you
