I don't remember if I posted these before, but I just ran across them when cleaning up my hard drive. Earlier this summer we had some major flooding and I went out to the airport thinking I was going to fly. The normally 15 minute drive took over an hour because I kept running into flooded roads and had to back track.

This is a picture from the approach end of runway 5:

Looking from the end of the taxiway towards the runway:

I pondered it for awhile then got the airport manager's permission to take off from the taxiway when along comes this genius. We thought he was planning to depart from the taxiway but watched dumbfounded as he taxied right into the water and back taxied on 27. You could see and hear the prop tips slapping the water. Pretty soon he realized it wasn't going to work and he taxied back. When we asked him what the hell he was thinking he said he thought maybe the other end of the runway was higher and might be dry. This is 3700 foot runway and the taxiway enters at about 1/3 of the way down, so even if the other end was dry this rocket scientist wasn't going to take off with the full fuel, passenger, and two full suitcases we watched them load.

I didn't know the guy, but after asking around found out stunts like this were pretty common. He's known for starting the plane in the hangar and taxiing out.

I had the opportunity to attend the official handover of the new 787 to Qantas.

Quite a remarkable aircraft with some very impressive performance figures. At $194,000,000 per aircraft, it would want to be.

John Travolta's 707 is sitting on the tarmac as well.

At $194,000,000 I would have expected the harness on the MLG Truck to be tidier and better protected, at least wrap some spiral wrap around it

Did you notice that of all the aircraft on display, the only one that had armed gaurds was the B2?

I know on our aircraft anything orange is usually some sort of test equipment. Do you think that might be the case with all the orange wiring there? It looks like it was all kind of slapped on, so to speak.

Yep. I think it's the fact it's so expensive and there's only something like 19 left after the crash in Guam. They used to do the same with the F-117 and F-22.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw that photo a few hours ago... I guess this is what you get when you have electric brakes. You would have thought that they would have run all the wires inside the conduits to protect them. I can see lots of Avionics guys coming to curse these airplanes when the job they get assigned to them is another 'wring out the wires' session on these babies. It will be dirty from the carbon dust and possibly cooked from the heat.

I wonder why the trailing edge of the cowl is scalloped like that? Anybody have any idea?
