If you get a chance to fly in that restored Beech 18 you'll see that it is already equipped with a "surround sound" system.

Radial surround sound I believe.

Lol

I got to hear the left channel when we took turns sitting in the pilot's seat and starting and running ground checks on it in our ground ops class.

Such cool planes, Beech 18's. Got to hitchhike occasionally on a a float Beech 18 in Alaska. Knew a guy who flew freight in them (used to be common freight dogs) - and he'd haul his small dog and a Honda 90 to get around on the day lay-overs.

There was a guy in LA that had a tri-gear 18 and would take it on surf safaris to Mexico and central America - again with a small bike to get around - he lived in it like a RV.

I know they made them until at least 1965, and perhaps even up to 1969. There are some gorgeous restored examples out there. Go for the gray mohair interior option.

It will tighten up, especially between the top 4 racers. Qualifying is not as important as in other motor sports, evidenced by Strega's DNQ for this year's event. Strega, with Steven Hinton Jr. at the stick, has won the top prize three years running, yet their broken canopy issues put them seriously behind the 8 ball. They're taking advantage of a rule that states that if the number of entries is below a certain size, then they are allowed to start at the rear of the field and work their way up. The pilot, Matt Jackson, is a very experienced racer, and should have no problems ending up in the Gold final on Sunday.
Another consideration, especially for the inline-engine racers, is the toll that each lap at speed takes on the equipment. Some of these engines are running double the manifold pressures that they were designed to, and sometimes the failures are spectacular. Precious Metal is racing on a ferry motor that still has to last the entire week and fly Thom Richard home to Florida on Monday. His qualifying speed, while good, is far below what most of us armchair quarterbacks believe the aircraft is capable of, and he'll be in good shape should one of the top 2 or 3 blow a motor during the week. It's really a shame that they couldn't have the higher HP of their tuned motor, but that, as they say, is racing.

Rare Bear's loss of power is, in my very jaded and humble opinion, a thinly-veiled sandbagging effort. Sometimes air racers run on bullshit, too.

This being the 50th Reno National Championship Air Races, you can bet that Voodoo, Strega, Rare Bear, and 232 will open everything up on Sunday for the bragging rights to the tall trophy.

Rare bear was still out on the ramp doing really shitty sounding high engine runs after dark tonight. That ain't no sandbagging.

You'd think that with the resources of Lewis Air Legends they'd have sorted things out by now.
There are rumors that this is RB's last year on the course, and that she'll be relegated to a museum duty. Sure hope not.

Are the Air Races televised?

In other news the last C-17 gets delivered. Always thought it was a pretty cool looking plane.

Well interesting day today. Strega ran the silver and won, but was DQ because he went over the hard line when passing. So he has to race again tomorrow in the silver to get into the gold.

Rare Bear still sounds like shit. They tried all day. Feel bad for them.

I cant comment on Precious Metal other than to say, the team is feeling the best they have in months about the aircraft

Reno 2013 ramp video

Went to Reno today and took a video with a handheld camera, a shakey but viewable.
