How about a look/see down to the DH on the A/P to do some data gathering from the FMS, Go Around, talk about it and either try or divert. Couple thousand # of fuel, cheaper than a divert. No harm no foul. And it makes for a good video.

The f86 has been out of flight status for some time due to hot section inspection needed. (thats a complicated story). but funding was secured and work is being done to get it back flying again very soon.

At the risk of getting this booted to CS&M, and with no disrespect to Mr. Mandella...

WTF do we need that many planes in a country so f*ing far away just to attend a funeral??

At least 14 US military/government aircraft. Not to be CS&M bait either but in 1963 the CIA was helping the South African government look for Mandela. Some say they found him and led them to him. I guess things change?

Yup. I worked 35 years in a Toyota dealership shop. We had several customers with the special "Pearl Harbor Survivor" license plates on their Camrys or Avalons.

In 1983 a Royal Navy Sea Harrier became lost at sea. With his fuel running out, the pilot landed on a passing small cargo ship.

The Royal Navy gave him desk duty for a while, but he went on to a long flying career. Details here.

Curious about his 900 hours in F/A-18's, I'm guessing as an exchange pilot with the USN?

I did hear about this and the owners of the ship claimed salvage rights on the aircraft and charged the UK Government a shedload of $$$ so they could get the aircraft back. True or not I don't know.

True (pssssst, details are in the link)
Nice pay day for the ship's owners.
Though I'd love to see a Spanish naval insurance adjuster's notes on a Harrier parked ontop of a flower delivery van.

How to build a jet fighter?

Step 1: Get an engine
Step 2: Bolt plane-ish bits to it until it flies
