Free fall on the landing gear will look after that.
at least it will be easy to see if the gear is down and locked

A Delta plane flying from Orlando to Atlanta lost part of its wing Sunday – but luckily, the flight landed without incident.

The panel came undone as Flight 2412 was in mid-air, leaving gears and wiring uncovered. As a precaution, the crew declared an emergency on approach, and the plane was towed to the gate after it landed, Delta spokesman Anthony Black told ABC News. No one was injured.

David Watterson, a passenger on the flight, was dozing off when he says he heard a big boom. He noticed a section of the plane’s wing exposed and hydraulic fluid leaking.

“All the passengers were remarkably calm,” he said. He says he did not feel any immediate danger, but it was “concerning to see a big chunk of the plane missing.”

Watterson said the crew members handled the situation professionally. Officials are now inspecting the plane.

Here's a couple more shots from the weekend. I went out on Thursday for some recon and caught the afternoon Fat Albert and BA practice, then back on Friday for my flight. Friday night was a night shoot on the ramp and dinner with the Blues. Saturday was the regular show, open to the public.

I forgot my tripod at the hotel, so I used my camera bag as a last ditch effort to get something decent.

I thought the Blue Angels and Thunderbird's had stopped doing air shows? The BA's canceled on our little show last year.

Back up and running this year....
They stopped due to the temporary funding issue that no one ever thought would happen.

Thanks. It's not tack sharp, since I had to use my camera bag as a tripod, but it's better than not getting any shots at all.

That An-2 has had a colorful history. I was on that particular aircraft years before the current owners.

Im going to get touchy feely here for a moment. This movie (Empire of the Sun, 1987) has always meant a lot to me, something in the story always really connected. Of course jims fascination with airplanes was probably a lot of it. This weekend at the airshow I had a few friends come out and in talking in passing I said something. Something that at the time I didnt really even think too much of. But one of them posted it on facebook with a pic of me and wow did it hit home. Somehow I was 12 years old again. The first is his quote of what I said, and then what he posted about it.

"I always wanted to be that guy at the show who was climbing all over the planes and getting in them, and now I am that guy."

Do what you love, follow your dreams, and keep trying. That's how dreams come true.
