I think there's an association that happens over time to create the sentiments we deem attractive. You didn't have the chance/experience to develop those sentiments with soviet era aircraft.

I remember the first time I looked at an R75/5 (near the main gate to Plattsburgh AFB, btw) I thought it was the goofiest looking thing I'd ever seen. Now, after tens of thousands of enjoyable miles on /5's I think they're one of the most elegant designs ever created.

There's a reason that one never made it past the "X" phase.

Good thing we usually don't get much snow!

Edit: wait, are there even engines or avionics in that thing? That could explain a lot...

It had engines I think, but no props.

It was a good 10-12" of snow too though.

We won't even start into the A-10.

Pretty is as pretty does, I say.

I thought Boeing did a beautiful job with the B47. I got to work on the last of the B47's at Lockbourne AFB in the early 60's. Beautiful bomber IMO, besides Jimmy Stewart flew one....

I found this while looking for LS1 powered planes. It looks pretty cool!

That's a good looking airplane. But it could have been Soviet, too?

I guess my point is, you spent time around them, watching them fly, fixing them when they needed fixing, forming friendships with other men who flew and maintained them. All these things helped to create in you a positive association with the type.

I met a guy years ago who pic'd B-47's and survived a total loss of his ship in a mid-air explosion. All of his crew were killed while he survived even though his parachute was destroyed by fire and completely non-functional. It's tattered remains candling uselessly above him snagged in the branches of a tree, slowed his fall and prevented his death.

He spent the rest of his carreer flying bush planes in South America for a Christian NGO.

That's what I think about whenever I see a B-47. That and the static example that used to sit outside Plattsburgh's SAC base.
