Hey, Air Tractors!

I work for the company that designed and builds the control system that operates the bomb bay doors on the fire fighting 802s (and 1002 coming soon).

I spend a good amount of time out at the Air Tractor factory in Olney, TX. Lots of fun to crawl around those planes. They're HUGE, I think the 802 holds the distinction as the largest single engine prop plane in production, or at least it did at one point.

You gotta see these things with people standing next to em to get a full appreciation. Especially the "fireboss" with the floats, HUGE.

It is HILARIOUS watching someone climb into the cockpit for the first time. Its way up there and it takes a little practice to swing in without kicking controls and instrument panels.

Here are some pictures I took while in Spain doing some upgrade / maintenance work on our system.

Thats a hanger on the island of Palma Malorca built by the Luftwaffe in WW2. Very interesting hanger design, I think i counted like 4 or 5 parts, plus sheet metal, it took to built the whole thing.

That panel over his left shoulder with the red displays and the dials is the control panel for our old first gen system that controls the amount of water dropped on a fire.

Here's a shot of the 1002, it is currently undergoing FAA certification, who knows when it will actually be in production.

2010 Gallery: X-37B Space Plane Returns to Earth

Cool photos of the semi-secret X-37B after it recently returned from space have been posted at the Universe Today web site...
I want one.

I would suspect it would/could be used to service/bring home "spent" spy satellites but the cargo bay doesn't appear big enough to hold the latest ones. And or it could be used as a reusable spy satellite itself especially if it had thrusters to enable it to dip into a very low orbit and then get back up to safe orbit and wait for the next task.
(disclaimer: I used to work on spy satellites at the Def Dept.)

I hope I'm not breaking a rule here but I've been volunteering with Bahamas Habitat to fly medical supplies and now water purification systems to Haiti since January. They are trying to raise some money to support the operation through 2011. If you would like to help, go here:

https://bmh.dojiggy.com/pledge/index...0A050A087B050D

If you have an airplane and might be interested in flying missions to Haiti then let me know and I'll get you in the system.

Thanks,

Gene Schmidt

The second ever built 747 was made into a restaurant, now shuttered, in S. Korea.
