New TAG from the Jaw-gens.... they snuck back in...

This is the NEW TAG:

To get to the tag (for a FUN ride ) Come up through Nance's Corner and turn on Kings Gap Mountain Road. At 1 mile before you turn on 55, just off to the left is an incredible rockwall, recommend a pause to admire. Not the easiest road on a mega-cruiser, but do-able.

Rusty and Family Together!

Rusty and Family Together!

As the old Peaches and Herb song goes, “Reunited and it feels so good…”, and on Tuesday, May 2, 2012, Rusty the Iron Man and his family were reunited and it felt good to all those who made it happen. Chuck Moore, local artist and creator of Rusty and his family, and Valley city employees moved the massive sculptures – Rusty weighs in at 2,810 pounds and his family tops the scale at over 3,400 – to their new home next to the CVR Rails-To-Trails and adjacent to the Historic Langdale Mill.

Now, some say that this is not really a reunion because they were never together in the first place. And some people say that it’s a reunion for at least two of them, which two they won’t say, but that’s another story for another time. Whether it’s a reunion or a beginning, Rusty and his family are finally together and, that’s all that matters.

For over 10 years, Rusty had stood close to Highway 29 across from the Cotton Duck and in front of Sears Memorial Hall. His family had been ‘staying’ in Warehouse #10 on the Historic Langdale Mill property. With the help of a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, Rusty and his family have a new home.

Rusty – all 2,810 pounds of him - was created from railroad parts from the old Chattahoochee Valley Railway that for many years ran through the communities of Shawmut, Langdale, Fairfax, and River View before they incorporated in 1980 and became the City of Valley, Alabama. Rusty’s wife, son, and family dog are made from parts that were once in machines that ran in the local mills.

All these sculptures came from the fertile and creative mind of local artist Chuck Moore. Not everyone is able to look at a pile of railroad and textile mill parts and see art, but Chuck has been doing it for years seeing faces and bodies in chalk, stone, and wood and bringing them to life through his wonderful gift of sculpting.

Rusty and his family now stand proudly on a large concrete slab next to what was once the old CV Railway. They look as if they might be waiting for the train to take them to West Point for a shopping spree, or maybe even to Atlanta. In case they have to wait awhile, a lamp post will be installed to give them light and also so that people passing by can see them at night.

While not as big as Birmingham’s Vulcan or not a World Champion like LaFayette’s Joe Louis stature, Rusty and his family are reminders of times when train whistles and mill whistles would sound throughout the day and night and life was a little less hectic and a little more laid back. And, what’s more – thanks to Chuck Moore, they’re part of us now.

“Reunited and it feels so good….”

New tag: not too far from the old tag, since Rusty and family and the kissing bride are worth a ride, now head here, which according to a local policeman, is in the Guiness world record book for multi storied building with multiple levels of ground entrances ( will check this when we get home).... Now fried green tomatoes at Sunny's and then running for the border!

Nice tag but the small pictures are going to make it hard for someone to find. And did you mean Kissing Bridge instead of Kissing Bride??
