99x oil consumption

Dealer changed my oil and after about 1000 miles the bike was down about 300ml of oil. No visible leaks. Bike has about 4500 miles total
Is there something else I need to think about?
I was really surprised by this, so I guess I need to check the oil before each ride!

First of all it's 9X0 not 99X. I know what you meant, I'm just being a nerdy internet troll.

I wouldn't worry about the oil consumption, the dealership may not have run the bike long enough after the oil change (careless mistaken but plausible). And the new filter may have taken on some of that oil.

If that wasn't the culprit, it's also normal for the bikes to use some oil. My 990 used some oil for the first 15-20K miles. But it gradually got better. Now with 50K on it, it doesn't use any. Keep a close eye on it for a while and make sure you aren't blowing smoke out your exhaust, but what you describe is pretty normal.

Pretty hard to take consistent oil level reading too.

Cold engine = no good

After a ride = no good

Etc.

Yep, No worries.. Under 10k in the ODO they tend to use a bit more oil, run hotter, consume more fuel:) Then they somewhat wear in.. If the oil consumption is getting out of control (let's say 1l/1000kms), than there are things to consider - like the balancer shaft seal - which is btw easy to service. But the cylinders/rings kind of never wear out (there are 100k+ km engines with the factory honing still visible) - so there is really no need to worry about expensive things here:)

BTW 300ml was what it took to raise oil level from bottom of dipstick below the min line to the max line
