yep! it's "only" sat for 5-6 years, they said it ran when they put it away. since it has sat in a barn. everything i've looked over seems decent, i kicked it a few times but got nothing. tomorrow i'm going to give it new oil, fuel and spark plug. if i get a pop or two i'm sure i'll just have to clean the carb and ride away. then invest in rustoleum...

got it started today, one of the jets was clogged, poked it with a pin, the dirt fell out and away i rode
. it seemed quite strong, but we could not get 1st gear. we dumped the oil out and found this:![]() it kinda feels like we can select 1st gear, but it does not make any noise in that position, just as if it was in neutral. any input is welcome , current ideas are; bent shift fork, stripped gear, or (really) worn dogs (or any combination). I have read about bearings going bad in the engine, but aside from a little valve noise it runs like a top, so we are assuming it is related to the problem in getting 1st gear. in it's past life the bike was used to chase cows, so it's easy to imagine first got quite a beating.

I'd say you have a gear that is missing a bunch of teeth... I just fixed an XL200S, very similar to your bike, for a friend. Its kicker gears were stripped, and thats the kind of stuff that came out with the oil (and the screen filter).

A little... I'm not all in to the "newer" ones, but I did have a 500 for a couple of years. VERY fun bike.

Howdy!
Count me in Dude! I'm already seeing Ernest T from the XL Page here too. I got the honda single bug bad, started with ATCs of all things. Now I have a few 175s and a 250 to play around with. I'll see how adding a pic or two of 'em goes. I suck, too much to do right now, maybe later.
