Cool2 Thoughts while lane-splitting

I suppose I shouldn't be thinking at all when I'm filtering between the cars and trucks, rather relying on instinct and sensory input, holding to a meditative state. But think, I do, and I'm often surprised at what comes bubbling up.

Work, home, love, life... it's all there, open for analysis and inspection, while I'm buzzing between big Dualies with hinged mirrors and slow-poke Hybrids. Hybrids! Why do they drive 'em so slow, I just can't figure it out...

Occasionally a life-saving jolt breaks through the mental fog, and reminds to look to my own mirrors, as the man in East Bay black on a rat bike decides he wants to share the "motorcycle lane" with me. Sure, fine, no problem mang. Mind the side cases on the GS, eh?

Time for another round of pothole patrol, and to take up the issue with CalTrans and CHP. There has got to be a way for a single citizen such as myself to get fast action on the gaping maw abyss there on eastbound I-80 just off the Bridge, center lane. As well, the rough interface between lanes 1 and 2 on 680 near Danville. Somebody send out the crews to fix these things, and I bet they have a phone on their desk.

I'm disturbed you didn't include the ever-present thought of installing some sort of lane-clearing rocket launcher.

I am that rocker launcher, 'twas ever thus.

The time I bounced between two trucks, and stayed up, I remember thinking "that was different," and kept on splitting. It didn't hit 'til hours and days later just how scary it had been.

Man, I think you are a little too relaxed.

I don’t do a lot of lane splitting but I find it fun to do. I remember one day in particular:
I was going north on 1 out of Carmel Highlands and the road was just a parking lot for miles and miles. I had the biggest grin on my face going through that.

Ain't it great?!

I've bounced the system cases of my RT off a few bumpers before. Clipped a few SUV/truck mirrors with the ones on my GS. No worries. Tensing up is bad, m'kay.

The area between lanes 1 and 2 on 101 south coming into San Rafael always seems terrible to me, not that I've split there more than a couple times.

Lane splitting seems to have a lot in common with riding singletrack on mt. bike or motorcycle. Not much else really has the same flow of decisions made in the not quite conscious mind. IMHO.

Yeah, I see it as a technical ride. A lot of fun and requiring my attention.

I found the majority of thoughts, if any at all, are more along the lines of 'turn signal, A**HOLE!' and 'pedal on the right' and of course 'that would be a great shot'

80/580 is crazy during commute.
A whole different breed than the 101ers.

I love splitting.

Here in Germany, they will close the Autobahn if needed- you're stuck too bad.

One morning there was a fatal accident, car went into the opposite travel lane. Only one lane was open, split through it in 15 minutes, guys at work took 2 hours!

I did get pinched between a semi and a panel van, as in my handlebars were stuck. I had to turn them and wait for the van to move.

Being a new rider, my only thought when lane splitting is "please don't open the door" :)

It does get my heart racing!

What about 19th Ave through San Francisco? It gives me the giggles but I wouldn’t want to do it all the time.

The scariest was (trying to) follow a guy who was lane splitting Oak Street in San Francisco (one way, timed lights, at least 4 lanes) while doing a wheelie on an off road bike.

Out on the highway my wide GS with bags means I need to really center myself to lane split so I am doing the Dah-duh, Dah-duh, Dah-duh, Dah-duh, Dah-duh, Dah-duh of the Botts Dots while trying to put it to music.

After my first major stoppie in traffic, dodging a fool on my left who wanted to be in the space on my right, the thought occurred to me that it was probably time to reset the ABS, despite how attached I had become to the blinking red lights.
