How I laid my FIRST Egg

Thanks for the applause everyone. Here's the back story to how an upstate New Yorker found himself in the Midwest toward the end of "winter":

A friend of mine is an avid participant on advrider; he had scoped some bikes in the flea market that fit my interest, but in order to see them I had to register (never lurked before!). I was glad I did, I met an awesome GS owner who was reluctant to sell such a great bike. I had a plans for a climbing trip to Red River Gorge, Kentucky (a week out), and the seller accommodated the fly and ride; so, within the week I was on my way to Lincoln, Nebraska for pick-up.
Thanks to rckyrdr for the airport pick-up and my FIRST (and only) great fly and ride experience!

Once I sat on this bike, I knew Kentucky wasn't far enough away, and thankfully I could fill some extra miles to detour and pick up Eggy! I left Lincoln around 9:30am, and headed toward Kansas. Once I picked my FIRST tag, I kept heading East through the windiest day of Missouri weather--at least it seemed like it. I thought to stop and sleep since I was on a 10 hour ride so far, but kept hauling'.

Around 2am I rolled past my FIRST Iron Butt mark (1,000 miles in 17 hours). I kept riding until 3:30am to Slade, Kentucky where I went rock climbing for 3 days, and where YOU'll find EGGY!

Considered the Sport Climbing Mecca in the US, Red River Gorge is known for its unique sandstone pockets and plethora of climbing destinations. Eggy decided to join in on some of the action on "Getting Lucky in Kentucky" a 5.11b:

Before we get to Eggy's temporary resting place, I should tell you that you MUST stop by Miguel's Pizza on Route 11--best toppings and crust you'll find south of New York & the local Ale 8:

They also have a campground (climbers only) where I pitched and spent my nights.

The frosty morning of the drop was an omen for a clear sky ride home, and very cold night. However, packing my tent and saying goodbye to fellow climbers took a bit long than expected, but I couldn't wait to explore more of the roads around Slade.

I'd recommend the following route: exit 33 off the Mountain Parkway to 11 to 77 to 715. This loop takes you through a unique one lane tunnel which was built in 1911, called Nada Tunnel:

Afterward, 15 miles of curvy roads should make for a fun circuit. I didn't find much gravel that was fitting for Eggy, so it's near one of the pull-offs.

Near milemarker 2 is where you'll find Eggy. The milemarker is on the Minifee County side of route 715.

THIS IS THE TAG SHOT:

Walk to the right of the boulder and you'll be getting warmer...

Because the egg enjoyed scaling the rock walls, Eggy lays in between two large flakes of rock at the pull-off.

It is covered with leaves and twigs.

While you're around the area check out Daniel Boon Nation Forest hikes, The Natural Bridge State Park and the multitude of other roads I didn't get a chance to explore.

Good luck with the pick-up and enjoy the roads.

Oh sure....if that's how you'd wanna make a ride like that. NOT ME!

There's WAY too much to see out there for me to simply ride on by. (I did that back when I drove OTR semi trucks.) Forget it!!

I wanna SEE the sights and smell the flowers. You know.......ENJOY THE RIDE!!!

After a nice ride down the length of Indiana yesterday (picking up the ST-Owners Indiana tag), I stopped for the night just north of Eggy's spot. Wet on the outside but dry in my bivouac tarp...

Short jaunt around this morning to see the Nadee tunnel, then a few more miles to...
https://picasaweb.google.com/1140841...eat=directlink

Eggy has expressed interest in seeing some dry lands after languishing in the damp, dark, deep, depressing recesses of the Red River Gorge so we're gonna head west. But first...
