Oil Leaks

When I bought my bike the skid plate was full of oil too. I've got the same bike, same year, and after removing the skid plate and doing some cleaning, it appears that it's leaking from the copper gasket around the 17mm hex head bolt that is next to the oil pan drain plug. It's the one that is kind of on an angle on the opposite side as the kick start. The owners manual specifically tells you not to remove that bolt because it is holding tension on the kick start return spring. But if that is leaking I don't think I have any other choice. Has anybody removed that bolt before?

Rode the 605 to the hardware store the other morning and came out to see this parked next to it. Not an ATK, but the side case said ROTAX.

Found an interesting picture of an ATK Avenger in another thread :

http://www.americandirtbike.com/Avenger13.jpg

Couple of things that caught my eye(s) :

- Has it got some sort of automatic chain tensioner ?

- Has anyone got (detailed) pictures of the rear shockmount ? It looks like the shock is almost horizontally mounted, and connected to the left hand side swing using round tubes ...

The Original ATK had a wide device that prevented the chain from binding upon compression of the shock. Its a german thing. You can google ATK history and it will explain better than I can. American Dirt Bike is still building bike's off this old design.

Heres a picture of an Avenger naked.

Notice that they're still putting the rear brake rotor on the countershaft
Its a strange critter but then thats how all the early ATK's was till about 94 I think it was.

Has anyone here ever owned an Avenger?

Has anyone here ever seen an Avenger in person?

How many bikes do you think Avenger sells? How do they stay in business?

The device is where ATK originally got it's name. Anti Tension Kettenantreib, from the German "chain drive", was developed by ATK founder Horst Leitner, now head of AMP research.

Question Dellorto

Need some help with the Dellorto carb on my '97 605DS. I removed the flipper choke the PO had installed and went back to the factory choke cable. Also took carb apart and cleaned all the jets. Now I'm having issues. It will not start with choke at all, gets bogged down. Will only start with open throttle. Then will only stay running with 1/4 to full throttle. Will not idle. Dies as soon as I let off the throttle.

I've taken the carb apart twice. Tried every sort of idle and bleed screw adjustment i can think of. At a loss for what to do next. Have tried so many times the battery is dead at the end of the night. Seems like its getting too much fuel vs. not enough.

Perhaps it's possible i didn't reassemble something right, but the fact that it will start and will run if the throttle is open confuses me.

The mechanics in my area are not willing to look at it...being an ATK.

Any hints?

Are you sure you put the cable choke together properly? Is there slack in the choke cable when it's closed? It sounds like the choke plunger isn't sealing the port down inside the hole.

Talk to Bruce,
he owns the place, its a small motorcycle shop. He has been an ATK dealer for years. He can probably help you.
He's open from 4pm to 7pm.

Tell him Terry said to call.

My first guess is air leak somewhere, but I'm no expert on carbs by any stretch of the imagination!

check that the kill switch in in the run postion , don't laugh BTDT, then see if the choke is working, then make sure the needle and slide are working, basicly double check everything you've done. One more thing to check is the carb boot to the motor, I had mine backfire and push the carb out of the boot.
