Heads up: Beware!!! Danger to ATK 600 owners

Been a while since last post. Going over the winter check-out of the 600DS and checked the drive sprocket and found the drive shaft to be nearly 50% stripped of its splines. I've owned the bike for 2+ yrs and never checked this before.

Emerg call to Keith @ ADB who knew instantly the problem. Some previous owner put a aftermarket sprocket (sprocketspecialists?) which does NOT align properly on the countershaft. This throws the load onto a smaller portion of the splines and can lead to a complete stripping of the splines on the shaft and a COMPLETE engine take down to repair (Keith's estimate $800 - $1500 depending). Otherwise the dang thing runs great! I am faced w/ replacing w/ a Rotax sprocket and crossing my fingers until she completely strips out or going ahead w/ rebuild. A bulletproof engine brought to her knees by a sh...y aftermarket sprocket!!! Arggghhh!! Beware, brothers and sisters, Beware

At a local VMX meeting I was surprised to see our club treasurer drag out these two.

These are the only two I have actually seen in the flesh here in Australia.

yeah the sprocket is a bad deal, aftermarket one are fine as long as you get the shouldered ones.

two ATK's in OZ? if they really are the only two i wonder if there is a story to how they got there?

They wouldn't be the only two, just the only two I have ever seen.

I was flicking through a magazine I bought from 88 or 89 and they had an add for a bike shop that sold them.

But from memory they were quite a lot more expensive than anything else here at the time, but I do have a price list from 1990 somewhere so I'll double check that.

Bert Flood imports was importing them in the mid 90's and brought a few containers of them over. I bought a brand new 95 model plus added five more over the years.

From memory ATK start out by making frame kits for the XR600 before they went to making complete bikes with the Rotax.

Your dead on the money Trev. I think from memory they also made them with the Honda motors, but then Honda stopped supplying them so they went to Rotax.

I love the looks of the 1994-95 ATK 605. The picture a few posts back makes me homesick for the one I used to own.

I've been wanting an ATK 260 for a longgg time now. saw one locally on craigslist about a month ago. claimed to have been street legal in another state (North Carolina) and the guy was asking a little more then it was worth. 1700$. it was also for sale at a consignment store so it was difficult to get in touch with the owner. seemed to sketchy so i passed on it and i wish i didn't. Its one of those bikes ill prob never own since they are so hard to come by.
