it was over 12", 30' off the shore
Safe enough for a quad. I didn't measure with a tape, but it we decided to play it safe, especially with the diesel truck we were driving. We used the quad to plow and did not take the truck out. You should have heard the ice crack...fantastic and eerie. "Big Legue" by Tom Cochrane kept running though my head.

Where do you get the studs? I'd like to stud up a set of dirt tires I dont like. I'm sure the XRR would do a good job of trying to spit them out.

we are using screws specially made for ice. The tires are specially made too. They look like regular sand/mud MX tires (not the dune tires) with rows of screws, but the profile has been reshaped and run two inner liners made from old street tires. The screws are 1 1/2 long. There is quite and art/science to making them.
The first year we bought the screws with 1/2 or 5/8 lenghs (1/2 for the fronts) and had a blast. We found the knobs came apart as the tires got used more and we started to ride harder and soon the limits of their performance. You can buy or order the screws through most bike shops (we have used GW and Blackfoot). Ask for cold cutters or Holiday screws to make ice tires with.

Dog House...
I've finally learned - no motorcycle parts as a gift for my wife at Christmas. One year I bought her a tire (really nice Metzler), another year it was a u-joint for her Guzzi (I even gave her 2 of them so she would have a spare). Ended up like these guys:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agbnhhWe4tU Now I just stick to chocolates & jewellery - much cheaper in the long run. Merry Christmas to the Calgary DS group. Cheers, Andy |

Have a great Christmas everyone! I'm glad I found this crew and I'm looking forward to many more enjoyable rides with you all. It's good to share a common passion with great people.
