Yes, but it took a 2-smoke to get there (at least it was a KTM)! That hill looks a lot steeper when your going up it on a 990, I could have sworn was a mile long!

Hanging out with the folks in Cranbrook for the past week. Had a chance to do a bit of riding:

Still life with motorbike… ;-) the Balsam Roots were blooming all over the place. Truly amazing:

Rockies east of Cranbrook:

Country roads…. Take me home….

Well, I guess this is where I'm supposed to go:

But this looks a whole lot more interesting (Sign says "No Road"):

You'll never guess which way I went.

An old homestead:

The old Mayook School House. Now restored an used as a community centre:

Sweet pics. I would love to ride the Cranbrook area someday. I lived there for part of a hockey season in the mid 1990's and always thought the dirt roads around town were calling to me...

It's a treat, and the snow is already gone to quite a high altitude (6000'). Endless trails and roads to explore.

McLean on Sunday?

Looks like this Thursday night's ride will be a wash-out at McLean, but anybody up for a rip there on Sunday (supposed to be sunny and a high of 26 then)?

Andy, it just so happens I have the entire day wide open and would love to ride Sunday. Where are you thinking?

I haven't been to McLean yet this year... I think it's time to check it out. Maybe take a ride up Quirk Ridge and down the backside?

It might be REAL slippery going down the north side if we don't get some really nice weather. A novice/intermidiate rider on a real off road bike with full knobbies would find it challanging to hard in difficulty. There were still snow patches.

We were up there on Sunday going north to south and a rider who races intermdiate couldn't make it up one streach without all of us pushing. My bike (KTM 250 xc-w) go pushed/lifted a lot more than his. So we were headed up the difficult streach, and you will probably go down that streach. We also went down that way and there were some pucker moments, but no incidents. Lots of wet rocks, roots, clay under loam type riding. The rest of the loop is great though, especially on the way down. Really fun single track.

If you do the loop south to north I would walk that hill (say .5 km north of the top view point) to see if it is OK. The worst section is the lower "step". The thing is that once you go down the first part you are committed to the rest of the loop unless you want a serious workout.

If you go north to Quark and do it as an in and out, rather than a loop, you should have alot of fun.

Thanks Dwayne... maybe we'll leave the descent on the north side to later in the year. I just want to get out for a ride, not interested in having a coronary in the process.

Any idea what the ridge (Cloud 9 I think...) is like that is to the east of McLean Creek road?

I am not too sure of what ridges we rode on the east side, or what they were called. I was playing try to follow the leader, and didn't have much time to figure out what was 6 feet infront of me, forget about navigating. As I recall the stuff further to the north is not as trashed by the logging. I haven't spent tons of time over there. You might check out Barwell, it is a fun ridge run that isn't quite as high as Quark (less snow, moisture?). Be prepared for lots of blowdown. The wind was pretty high this week, and there was still stuff laying around from the winter.

Hey if you guys are coming out to Corner Grass this year, come over to our place, I got the new toy hauler with a HUGE awning and lots of other ammenities.

I would love to go Sunday. I am hoping for good weather over the next few days AND more importantly, the nod from the wife... but first I have to duct tape her legs together so she doesn't hatch on her due date... which happens to be Sunday!!!

So odds are, I will only go for a short jaunt if at all...
