I don't have any pics here in Tucson, but we traveled all over western EUR in the latter part of the 70s in a blue and white Dodge van with a Mercedes camper top on it. How the dood that owned the truck before us got the MB top on it is beyond me. Had 6' + of headroom. Cabinets all round the perimeter of the camper for 'stuff' (up to and including Deviled Ham and Chicken).

It was the vehicle I learned to drive in. Thought I was fer sure fucked my first drive on my own. Raining, didn't see the cage that was barreling down the road as I was turnin left. I was cringing, waiting for the BANG! when it didn't happen, I was WAY relieved!

Wanted this van, spent the money on travel instead,
It went for about 5K on ebay a few years back.

I've never had a van that I would consider aesthetically pleasing or anything like that. It's the utility, or the live-out-of-it-ability that attracts me.

I grew up in the 70's as well. So Rich McCasland's folks had a Dodge with a 'glass topper that was forgotten until Napoleon Dynamite. It was the same freaking Santana conversion that Rich had. And the Coronas brothers all had Chevy vans, and they were in the "Hula Vanners" van club and all the 6th graders thought that was cool as shit.

But the prom where the girl's dad let her take the van was the best......5am in a church parking lot? Good times.

And the #1 reason why my kid will never own a van.

Vans..Ahhhh! We love 'em. If you can only have one vehicle, a van it has to be. It's a van, it's a passenger car, it's a truck, you can sleep in it, make a business out of it. I'm thinking about selling our Astro and getting an 'Uncle Rico' ala Napolean Dynamite. If I had the bread right now I'd be in one of those Mercedes, a shorty with a low roof. Some of the class B motorhomes are really sweet too. Our Louis just bought a 1999 VW Rialta, it's 22' long, so more than a van, but it drives like one. We've spent MANY a comfortable night in our Astro down on the beach in San Felipe.

I had a flat nose Dodge van. Poly 318, gear shift on the dash. It was a camper van as well. I can't say I loved it, but it got me back and forth to work in the summer of '92.
