7 Lessons Learned From Owning an Exotic Motorcycle

"This is an account of my experience as a first-time exotic bike owner, with some lessons learned along the way. No two owners’ experiences are the same, but if the siren song of a Husaberg or an MV Agusta has you considering one of the “other makes,” these lessons may serve you in your journey."

Continental Optimized Curve Braking

"Combining braking and turning forces is not just a challenge for riders, but also for designers of anti-lock braking systems. Motorcycle ABS has to deal with a variable (lean angle) that car systems don't have to consider."

Embrace The Crash: A Noob Does L.A.-Barstow-Vegas

"A chill breeze floated past my cheek as I looked around, admiring all of the "proper" (as my boyfriend, Justin, would say) dirt bikes. Two-strokes and adventure motorcycles circled the parking lot, mixed with old Triumphs and even scooters, all about to take on the annual L.A.-Barstow-Vegas desert dual-sport ride."

Resealing 35mm Forks

"Winter is often old-bike project time on Lemmy Mountain, and along with my contemporary, Sturgis, I recently serviced the front fork on one of my bikes. Even if you don't have the exact same fork, this is a "representational" fork similar to many other units, so the tips here will apply broadly if your fork has a leaking seal that needs replaced."

2014 Kawasaki Z1000 ABS Review

Sugomi: An intense aura or energy given off by a person or object of greatness and felt by the viewer. Someone, or something, possessing sugomi inspires awe, leaves an indelible impression, is imposing in stature or ability, and commands respect.

“Sugomi can be seen in the crouching form of a hunting predator as it gathers energy in preparation to strike, muscles tensed in anticipation, eyes locked onto its prey.” — Kawasaki

"Kawasaki says the 2014 Kawasaki Z1000 ABS was designed, both in terms of performance and aesthetics, with this concept of Sugomi in mind." — Bucky Bautista

Why things are the way they are: Clutch actuation

"This particular WTATWTA article is a reader request, which is a landmark for Common Tread, because I believe this is the first time that we've had an article requested. I’m rather proud that at least one rider considers us some sort of authority on… well, on something. Our reader was curious as to why some bikes are fitted with a hydraulically operated clutch instead of the cable-actuated clutch that has been common for years. It’s a good question, because most manufacturers don’t spell out the reasons. Like most of the other things we cover in this series, it’s not a question of which is “better,” but rather which characteristics a certain rider might prize more highly."

-Lemmy

Because he likes doing things differently from the crowd, Lemmy prefers a foot clutch.

"Is that a Ducati? Sometimes I imagine Ducati and Aprilia are brothers, with Aprilia constantly trying to get out of Ducati's shadow and win recognition from riders who love Italian motorcycles."
