Motor Life for xr400 before rebiuld needed?

I am wonder how many km you can expect from an well cared for xr400 motor before it starts feeling like a rebuild is nesscessary? I know this is impossible to answer with any sort of real accuracy, but I am just hoping to get a basic idea.

I have about 25000 km now and was hoping I can expect 50,000 or perhaps even more.

Since the XR400 motor is very similar to the XR600/XR650L in design, I would expect it to have a similar life expectancy. Being well cared for is the key to long life. I have read in other threads where stock XR650L's have gone 30,000+ miles without a top-end overhaul. I think if you keep up on the oil changes, there is no reason you should not get 50,000km out of the motor before needing rebuild. Basically, if it's not smoking due to burning oil getting past the rings, you have nothing to worry about.

I would agree, if it's not consuming oil or making any terrible noises you're in the pink. It's very hard to quantify the life span of a dirt bike motor but regular oil changes, valve adjustments, and air filter cleanings will make sure you get the most from it.

IMO the XR400 motor has the potential to out last the 650L primarily because of the efficient oil cooler on 400. I have seen top ends needing rebuild because of mud getting into spark plug hole during plug change on the trails. Other causes of engine wear are related to installation of hop up parts and motor running very hot or high compression with low octane gas. But keep motor stock and well maintained and it is tough to wear um out.

I disagree. I've had all the big XR's from 400 up, including 650R.
The 650L is in a very mild state of tune compared to the 400R and 600R, or my '82 500R ...not that any of them are what you'd call radical. Cam timing, compression....the L is a relative softie.
My high compression 628 runs between 200-225f oil temps unless it's a smokin' hot day and I'm pushing it....then maybe 250f.
Yeah, and oil cooler would be nice, but it's not cooking the oil at all.

The 400R took me to Copper Canyon and back - and it's working when you're keeping any pace on pavement. I don't think the oil cooler can offset how much harder the motor is working in any given situation compared to it's bigger brothers.

(I've never changed a 4T plug on the trail)
