I was told my by automotive electrician mate and electrical engineers at work NOT to put the grease anywhere near the terminals because you limit the contact connection. If you use it, put it in the back of the connector to seal the air out of it. YMMV

Correct. You don't put it on the terminals and then connect them. But rather get your terminals very clean, connect them and then add the grease on the outside of everything. That keeps all the crap out of it.

Based on that diagram you'd want the Negative Switching Relay.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had a large reply typed up earlier, but the site decided to crash on me as I posted (am I the only one experiencing a lot of lag and lost time outs on this site after the latest upgrade ?)

I'm guessing my battery terminal grease is pretty much the same kind of grease your all using. It doesn't conduct electricity and prevents corrosion and oxidation.

I had everything cleaned up and greased the back of the terminals as instructed. Put everything back together and nada. After some messing about I managed to isolate the problem to pulling and pushing the wires in and out of the switch housing; making and breaking the contact to the ignition. Since the plug and socket are now clean and greased the problem must be inside the switch itself where the little white plastic thing turns with the key and makes contact to the different pins/ wires. Problem though is that the switch itself seems to be cast in plastic and I'm not sure if it's possible to open it up. Anyone done it ? If so how ?

I'll have a go at it tomorrow so you have about 15 hours to blind me with your genius

Pics? I've never had mine apart but it might be similar to other switch someone has used. Tick Tock....

How did you paint it? Just rattle can? I'm looking to do my 650gs to get rid of the ugly metallic blue color.

Any particular reason for going with two shades of black ?
Any pro tips on how to remove old (5 years) rattle can paint from plastic panels
I've thought about paint remover, but I'm afraid that'll eat the plastic. I've also considered light sandblasting. Sandpaper is out of the question

I was going to wait to post any pics untill I was done with it, but looking through the pics I've already taken, I'm thinking it actually is possible to open it up

So this is the first thing I see.... fuck me, not looking good at all

Pull it apart (and break one of the tabs in the process....of course...)

What's the last pin for ? Our bikes only use 4 out of 5 pins in the ignition

Got it cleaned up alright

And stuffed as much grease as I could in there

And looking through the pics I noticed what looks like a second release tab. Thinking maybe I can pull the switch itself out from the other end....will check that out later and report back.
