Get a 328, 330 or M3 and you'll love it. They were chosen as car of the year every year for w while for a reason.

The cooling system usually needs replacement around 100k - 120k miles.

The wifes summer ride, 94 e36 150,000 (looks like I should clean the lense once in a while on the camera))

Picked up this sweet 87 e 30 last winter with a blown t belt, which also broke the head, The car was a mint 1 owner so I fixed it and sold it.

I miss this motor. Smoothest powerhouse I have ever driven.

I figured this is the right thread to put an end to a work argument.

If BMWs are such fine automobiles, then why do they get such a bad reliability rap in Consumer Reports?? Some models are rated as bad as the hated Chevy Cavalier.

Euro cars typically have more little niggly problems that pop up. They are usually really pushing the technology when a new model comes out. It does not excuse them, but most of us who love euro cars just put up with it. The problems typically are not major, but an annoyance none the less.

They also usually require a bit more $$ maintenance than say a Ford. But if you are willing to put up with the little issues and more stringent maintenance, the rigs last for many, many years still driving and running like new.

When buying used euro cars, low miles is not as important as good records and maintenance. The drive trains, in general, go forever with good care. The V-12 I posted above in my 750 had over 250k miles on it and purred smooth as silk. Yes, I did have to replace the intake ga$ket$ once, but it was dead reliable other than normal wear items. One of my Porsches has 190k on the original motor and the leak down tests as well as oil pressures show the motor is near perfect. My Mercedes daily driver just clocked over 140k today and still runs like new. I did have to replace the shocks this year though.

Well it's not the "cool" model right? My 740 was fairly attractive but it wasn't an M3 or M5.

What I really enjoyed of that car was the "slingshot factor". The less time I can spend in the oncoming lane when passing the better. The 5 speed auto would push you into the seat past the 160kph mark without a problem. It was too heavy to beat anything from a light but it had long legs out on the open road.
