I can't throw down the miles like you can, and my riding style could be described as 'triathletic in a fredly sort of way' but I'm enthusiastic. Wanna start an ADV biking group? Once-a-month rides?

I almost went with a Tallboy but the guy wanted near the price of new for something with a non-transferable warranty.

I sure liked that frame...

I figured I'd post up my completed '63 BSA Sports, since it's FINALLY done.

I started with a piece of restaurant flair, that was destined for the dumpster. The new lessee of the building wanted the walls cleared of everything and this was one of the items. The only thing I could salvage was the frame.







This is what I ended up with.

Thats beautiful!!

So let's hear the story. I ride a bianchi pista and absolutely love it but have been wanting to find an old frame to restore like that. I hear there are issues with doing so related to thread pitch, bearings etc. edumacate me.

As I mentioned, the only thing I could save was the frame. Initially, I was just going to hang it in my shop and leave it. But, I really wanted a unique, SS, around-town bike.

When I tore it down and started measuring stuff, I realized that, diameter-wise, everything was common. All Raleigh Industries bikes are 26TPI. That's no big deal, as you're only moving 2 threads, over the course of an inch. The steerer is 1" and we just ran a 24TPI die down it. The BB was re-threaded to a 1.37 X 24TPI, which is nothing unusual, except you gotta' find a shop with the Campy toolset.

Now, this bike is all modern, sealed-bearing and the riding experience feels it. English bikes are known for their compliant ride. And, this one is no exception. I own/have owned every frame material and configuration, except Ti. This bike, even with its 28mm tires, rides better and more efficiently than all the others. No, it's not as fast as my TT bike was, but, I have spun this thing to 26mph (42 X 18) and did it with a better ride. This bike totally changed my idea of the perfect bike. I've had three people take off on it and all three want one. I'm currently in the process of building a '63 Phillips Ranger for one and have the frame and awaiting parts selection for another.

What I used for components:

Brooks B17 Imperial saddle
Brooks bar tape
Jagwire cables
Tektro R556 brakes
Tektro RX 4.1 levers (stripped and polished)
FSA F Gimondi, 165mm, 42T, crankset
Miche, sealed bearing, BB
MKS Sylvan pedals
KMC 1/8" chain
Shimano 18T freewheel
Origin 8, sealed bearing, hubs
DT 2.0 SS spokes
Sun M13 II, 700c, rims
Panaracer Pasela, 700 X 28, tires
NOS headbadge
NOS seatpost clamp bolt
eBay decals

If you find a particular RI 3-speed you like, all this stuff works the same. But, if you want some type of decals, be sure you can source them, before buying the bike. You don't have to have 100% accurate replacement decals, as most people don't know what originally came on them anyway. Nice bikes are all over Craigslist. Just don't pay more than $100, even for a decent one. There isn't much of a market for the takeoff parts. Mine were completely roached, so it didn't matter.

Lastly, I have to give huge props to Velo Mine. I help and spend a lot of time, around there. They're enthusiastic, about any vintage stuff. Even better is that they have most everything on the shelf. Wheel selection was particularly crucial, to get the clean, yet vintage, look I was after. As I've mentioned elsewhere, they have over 500 wheelsets, hundreds of components sets, bars, seats, tires, etc in stock. It's nice to have something clamped in the stand and just go grab whatever you think might work, off the shelf.

Yes, for around town. I wouldn't takeoff on a century with them, though.

I tried a set of Nitto track bars, but, couldn't handle riding down the street. They're just too extreme, especially with the downward angle of the stem.

I have a set of Velo Orange Milan bars, for the Phillips project. They're about the same rise, a little wider, but the pullback angle is uncomfortable, for me. They need less pullback; more like a MTB bar. The moustache bars put your hands nearly paralell, so you can adjust your wrist angle with rotation of the bar in the stem. I hope that makes sense. Bottom line, for me, is that the moustache bend is the most comfortable, with the setup I have.

Lastly, if you're looking at these types of bars for a project, pay close attention to the diameters of you bar (clamp and lever area), stem clamp diameter, and lever clamp diameter. There's a plethora of sizes out there. It doesn't all work together, obviously.

Nice. I like hardtails. Hell, I learned to mountainbike on a rigid. Full suspension bikes feel way too heavy and mushy to me.
