Garmin - Map Detail
I'm starting to think this might be the search for the holy grail.....
I'm considering a garmin GPS receiver, the intention is nav for off-road tracks, mainly in VIC. I've been looking at shonky and T4A map data for some of the rides I've done previously and I'm a bit disappointed that the tracks don't show. Looking at google maps shows far more data. Example is looking for Barber Hill Tk, off of Mt Beenak Rd, straight off the Yarra Junction-Noojee Rd: 37.83188° S145.6709° E In Shonky and T4A I see the below which only shows Mt Beenak Rd (The unanmed Track) ![]() In google maps I see both tracks: ![]() Before I shell out for a GPS receiver I'd like to know if there is a garmin map dataset thats going to give me the detail I see in google maps (or at least better than shonky and T4A). I realise commercial data is probably better but its hard to get examples, so if anyone has any maps that do show that level of detail can you post up a pic of the same area so I can compare? Similarly if I'm chasing the impossible let me know ..... I've checked other riding areas with similar results ..... just can't see the tracks I've been riding ... and most are 4wd tracks rather than 'bike trails'. Ta, Dave |

I use the satelite images to check that the tracks are actually there before I set off on longer rides. It's neat to overlay the rides afterwards onto the sat. images too. Very handy.
