The kids Jeep is a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2wd (a Mom's Jeep), automatic. Admittedly I haven't used any Google Fu on searching for a solution yet. I appreciate the guidance though. I wonder if that switch is in the same location on his vehicle? Or if Toykoklahoma's solution is the right one?

all XJs of that era with automatic trannys used the Asin warner aw4 ( toyota) transmissions, as far as I know.

now, being a 2 wheel drive, it might be different, as ive never owned a 2wd Jeep vehicle.

my guess is its the $200 switch on the side of the trans above the pan.

I havent seen column mounted switches since the early days of the XJ with GM engines

but, its not a vehicle I am superbly familiar with either.

what engnie is it charlie?

rockauto shows both types of switches for a 99 4 cylinder auto ( both types, but both are mounted on the trans im pretty sure)

the 30rh is a chrysler tranny, the aw4 is the japanese one. Ill have to do more research to see what you have.

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,4584

EDIT

got it charlie

4.0 inline 6 used the aw4 transmission ( $200 switch mounted to tranny)

inline 4 cylinder used 30rh chrysler transmision with a $12 switch, also mounted to the tranny.

the 30rh, is basically an old Torqflight 904 with some electronic contols ( converter lockup)

tf904 from the bottom looking up.

aw4 from the passenger side, see the NSS on the side?

Everyone gathered for the "thataway" ride. See you FF's at lunch. Wendy's bringing my exchange gift because it is too big for the bike. ;)

Hey Matt, thanks for going to all that trouble on our behalf. I might tackle this switch Monday. Gotta make room in my Garage first.

I'm considering slamming the dealer but I don't know if there would any profit, in that.

The DR250 is gone to hell(Pine Bluff), I have 58500 miles on the F650 BMW and figured it was a good time to be looking for an upgrade. The MTS 1100 is really a fine riding machine, in spite of it's bubblious appearance. It only weighs 10lbs more than my BMW, has twice the HP and should get about 48-50mpg. I've had hankering for a Ducati for quite some time now and the price, low miles and one owner status, made this bike appealing to me. Too bad the sales rep wasn't forthright.

The day wasn't a waste, as I got to test ride a Triumph Tiger 800. It was a nice ride but I'm not really interested in spending 12K on a bike. For now I am planning to keep the F650 but if I find a nice street bike for commuting, I might unload the F650 and get me a lightweight trail bike for dual sport riding.

We wrote a report on the BBB web site on them. Of course the dealer had other problems on there. I wish i would have read about it before we drove all that way. We did find a nicer one just south of Denver and picked it up. But paid more. The BBB is nice because they email the place your writing about and it goes on the BBB web site. Not sure it helps but its a final way to say F/U. It made me feel better

Which dealer was it BTW? Also, if you ever get another line on a bike in the DFW area give me a shout. I can have one of my buddies take a look at it and at least verify it's shape before you make that long drive.

Charlie 99 Cherokee will most likely have a 42RE Trans. Has a three prong switch on drivers side of trans just below the shift lever. It is a cheap switch be sure to have a drain pan under it when you remove it. You will lose some fluid.
