Color case hardening is a surface treatment to harden the surface or case. Makes sense, no? It allows to surface to be hard (but becomes a little brittle), but keeps the inside metal soft so it doesn't shatter. It used to be done with a mixture of bone and wood charcoal paste spread on the metal, then placed into a high heat source, like a kiln. A byproduct was the nice colors, now associated with older guns. Some still use it just for the color effect. Really, nothing to do with rust proofing, that's what the bluing is for. Bluing is actually a form of oxidation or surface rust of a kind put there to stop further rusting. Still requires oil or a substitute to keep from further rusting though.

![]() I keep waiting for Ruger to make a .22 LCP so I can practice inexpensively. Doesn't sem to be in the cards So maybe a Thunder .22 and .380 are the way to go. Anxiously awaiting an opinion. Especially if cheap ammo will cycle reliably.

Do some reading up on the Bersa .22
I did and it scared me away from collecting it after buying one, got a refund instead. FTF, FTE, , picky about ammo, tight bore and leading...etc Hope yours works well but I didn't want to take a $300 chance. Pity as I really like the looks of the gun.

Speaking of pistols, picked up this P22 from a friend yesterday.
Not fired much, with case, extra sights, extra mag (an extra mag goes for 100+ on Ebay! ) and 500rds of 22LR for 500 bucks. Bit on the higher side but he just had a baby so I didn't have a problem tossing him some extra $$. Plus, the money I will save at the range will pay for itself in no time. ![]() The size is astounding. The little tab on the mag makes a huge difference, and no, my pinky does not fit on there all the way. ![]() Put it next to my XD-40 for scale. Yeah, my 40 is an oily mess I know. ![]() Prior to buying it, I did a range day with him, the P22 was unimpressive, averaging a jam/misfire every few shots. Upon reading, this is not uncommon with .22 semi-autos that are not target shooters. Most need a little dremel work and slight tweaks to function perfectly. I've already started the farkeling, and the gun was bone dry when I got it. ![]() I'm really enjoying the 22s with the current insanity. It's just too fooking expensive to shoot other calibers, and who knows when it will calm down, so I'm hoarding my larger stuff.

Not that .22 are that inexpensive anymore. I've read reports of $50, $60, up to $100 for a carton of 500 rounds right now.
Ya' think the days of $12-15 Walmart 525 round loose boxes of .22's are over or just awaiting the end of the madness?

Was just at Walmart on Friday and picked up two 333 boxes of LR for 15 bucks each and a box of 555 for 22 or something like that. After tax was OTD at 50 bucks. Nice to know we can shoot the plinkers again up here

I love the light weight and feel, but still it is a relatively low quality, not very accurate firearm. I recently purchased a 22/45 lite and installed a Volquartsen accurizing kit. The combination of superb feel, incredible accuracy, and the Ruger Mark series reputation for cycling nearly any ammo has relegated the P22 to a loaner pistol when I bring friends to the range with me.
