I wish I'd had something clever to say but i couldnt think of anything appropriate. And, I was in a good mood and didnt want to pick a fight with a little old lady. SO, I said "no, i really don't think I'll need it. But, if i do, i wont have time to go get it and put it on".

She didnt understand that I was wearing the jacket to prevent or lessen the effects of road rash. I didnt think it worth while to explain it so I just said "have a good day ma'am" and road off into the sunset (or was i going north? Hell, I rode off in any case...)

Shoulda just complemented her on her tits in her shirt

I was sitting on the GS pumping gas and the guy at the next pump commented on how nice it must be not to have to get off the bike to pump gas.

I said "yeah, it is".

Not too funny, but I finally got one and had to post it.

Bloke saw me with bike jacket on while walking to my bike he said that he knew some one who got killed by one of those, I said
Really ! do the police have any leads on the suspect Bike ?

What a dumbass thing to say to a biker.
Why say it to a biker and not to a cage driver? People die in cars all of the time and we don't point it out to other cagers do we?

My best guess is there is some psychological stuff going on will all this "i have to tell you about the guy who got killed" shit. Here's my guess:

-People on motorcycles look very cool and look like they are having fun.

-Everyone wants to be cool and have fun.

-These fatality stories are some sort of mental justification for not riding but somewhere, deep in their soul, they know they are missing out on something you have.

So, they are really just having a conversation with themselves, saying "i am a pussy and here is why".

I often get approached by people, and yeah, normally they open with kinda' dumb or redundant questions. BUT, I have heard some really cool motorcycling stories from old timers, learned about new places to ride (on and off road), been invited to go riding (going on a group ride in two weeks), rode a couple or really nice looking gals around the block on separate occasions (one of which calls me occasionally for another ride), found a couple of really good deals on "barn bikes", gotten job offers, etc...
Sometimes the people I meet aren't worth fooling with, but for the most part I get a big kick out of the gas station conversations. I like reading their faces too, the young guy drooling over my dirty bike or the old man who, in his mind, gets sent back many years to his days riding his BSA through the fields (and all the hell raising of his youth!). It's all cool, I'll talk to everyone of 'em.

Exacktly my feelings.I picked up a 07 Triumph Scrambler and it brings people out of the woodwork when I stop for a burger or gas,old guys love it and are taken back in time to their old brit bikes,women think its the slickest looking bike they have seen. I meet all sorts of people through bikes. Kids even jump up and down and wave when the bike rumbles by. I always take time to talk to folks.

Sounds familiar. One of the guys, that worked for me in college had a Ninja 900. One night his gas cap was left open, and he proceeded to show off for his future wife, by doing a wheelie. Of course the fuel came out and soaked through his leathers. He walked funny for about 2 weeks.

I usually answer that if motorcycles are dangerous and kill people, so is every other form of transport. The conversation is usually over at that point.
