That phenomenon is not exclusive to bikes. I had a lady ask me once if I knew "George", because he was in the Air Force.

She didn't know his last name, what he worked as, what squadron he was in, or if he was even at my base anymore. She just thought that I would know.

Heh, it's my day today.
I just walked into the McD in full hi-viz highlighter mimicry with my helmet under my arm.
Me: "One ice cream cone please"
Her: "For here or to go"

It wasn't so much a stupid question as it was a remark-on-autopilot.
Since her brain wasn't engaged I didn't put my smart-Alec sarcasm in gear. That usually gives undesirable results.

Had the EXACT same thing at lunch today (Zaxby's Chicken), hi viz and everything!

Sometimes I like to ask, for something like an ice cream cone, what they would do different to go versus "for here". Half the time they don't listen to my answer anyway and make the order to go even when I explicitly state "for here". I don't have high expectations for people with fast food jobs, and I'm not disappointed with most of their actions.

Stopped at rest area last summer when this scraggly looking truck driver approaches and says with a smile, "A Honda huh?" To which I say " yep. " He then turns to my girlfriend whom is wearing a jacket with a Harley Davidson logo, gives her a good long look and say's back to me, "maybe she's trying to tell you something"

that's not stupid. that's hilarious.
(says the guy that wears a suzuki branded helmet on a honda. :( )

As for the "to go" question, when I had my DR650, I frequently would go through the drive through. The tail bag had a handle that worked perfectly for holding a coffee or soda, and the to go bag fit fine in the bag. I would get some strange looks, and I had to remember, no wheelies out of there or I'd spill my coffee.

I go thru the drive thru on my bike probably a couple times a month. I dont get a drink, but when they hand me my food, I just reach back and put my food in the saddlebag and ride off. I do sometimes get some funny looks while in the drive thru line though.

You may consider that she IS telling you something.

I'd have said something about the fact that she's on my bike

To give her at least a little bit of a break, most road construction crews wear the same color these days, and many of them frequent fast food joints for lunch. Sure, she missed that bowling ball you had under your arm, but can you imagine how easy it is to let your brain go on cruise control working in one of those places?

You missed the point I think.

The funny thing here isn't really that she asked a moto rider if he wanted it to take out but the fact that there is not an ounce of difference between an ice cream cone to eat on site or to go.
