I just realized why I have so few "Stupid Question" stories... I wear ear plugs when riding and when filling up at gas stations... I can't really hear anyone.

I had some guy in a 'Ford' labaled t-shirt come up to me this morning, jabbering about something or another trying to catch my eye as I was filling up my DR650. Has passed the pump on the opposite side, but came up behind me still talking. The only thing I made out was when he used his hands/fingers to signify quotation marks as he said something to the effect of "people _____ law abiding citizens" to emphasize that statement. I'm not sure if he thought my DR was a true dirt bike, or what it was.

I told him I was sorry, but I had earplugs in, and pointed to my ear (hidden by my helmet).

I must be missing out on riding's comedic side, but my tinnitus from the wind and a year and a half of commuting (with earplugs put fully in - but sucky ones I guess... turns out I think they were made more for people sleeping than for loud sounds) is bad enough.

"You are a brave man, on a motorcycle" said a guy in the lobby of our office on a rather rainy day, when I walked in with full gear on and a helmet in my hand.
"Motorcycles and rain, they don't go together well".

Unfortunately I didn't have time to chat, so all I could do is assume that either he'd had a bad experience involving rain and a motorcycle, or he is one of many people that have the illusion that when it rains, roads get as slippery as black ice.

I remember someone at a fuel stop stating that he had never seen a Harley that was not a cruiser. He had seen the belt drive on the back of my BMW F650CS and had assumed.

I often had Harley riders comment that the rear pulley on the CS did not have an outer lip (as the Harley does) so how does the belt stay on, not really a stupid comment it just became a regular comment or question whenever I stopped near HDs

Riding with my dog in the Ural last weekend, I arrive at the dog park and a guy walks up and asks "Is it legal for him to ride without a helmet?"

I thought he was just being a smartass, so I replied "Well, I don't think the state has a lot of legislation covering dogs on motorcycles."

He looked at me confused, and at that moment I realized that he was dead serious. He replied "I'm going to have to look that up. I can't imagine that a passenger on any motorcycle can ride legally without a helmet."

He spent a solid half hour sitting at the dog park googling this on his iPhone. He finally surfaces with a "You're right, there isn't anything!"

Same places you buy dog seat belts?

Some people don't grasp that motorcycle helmets are about human heads, not motorcycles.

You should have told him to push it until the flat part was on TOP, then he could ride it home. QED.

Better than words

I used to have a BMW RT and rarely got comments. Now I have a new to me Ducati ST4. I took my youngest for a ride this weekend and while sitting in the left turn lane a gentlemen driving a Buick next to use just sat there and drooled through the entire light cycle. It was the funniest thing ever.

I think you could put a Ducati sticker on an SV650 and a lot of people would be "impressed" with it. When I used to ride a Ducati ST2, I got a lot of comments that I'm pretty sure were directly related to the word on the tank.

So yes, I tend to smell like exhaust after riding that bike.
Could it also be that we're in the airstream of the exhaust(s) from all the other cars on the road?

If you or someone in front of you is running rich, I think that's a big part of it. Once I drove by somebody's yard at night and somebody was smoking outside. I wasn't there but a split second but I smelled a little like weed when I got home.

WR250R Question

I get one of these a day

How fast does it go?
What does that thing cost?
Isn't that bike too small for you?
Can you ride a wheelie?
Do a wheelie?
Can that thing do a wheelie?

I got this one today as I walked into my office. "whutz the biggest hill you ever climbed on that thing? In return I said "how can I answer that?"
