Because it gives us a visual and enhances the story, just like the word "fat" gives you a visual.

Troll much?

I was sitting with a friend of mine, both of us astride our bikes, outside of a local burger joint on a busy Friday night. He was on a Harley 883, with a solo seat. Large crowd on the patio, everybody is mellow and having a good time.

Two somewhat large and apparently inebriated women pass by, and the larger of the two says very loudly to my friend "Hey! Give me a ride on your bike!"

He points at the rear fender to highlight there is no passenger accomodation and says "Sorry, can't do it."

She stops and yells at him "It's because I'm black, isn't it?!"

Well, all conversation on the patio comes to a screeching halt and everybody is now riveted to this scene playing out before them. She's glaring at him, almost daring him to deny it. I'm cringing, thinking this won't end well, considering the part of town we were in.

He calmly replied "No, it's because your fat, drunk and stupid, but hey, let's go with the black thing, if it helps your self-esteem."

I could almost hear the collective intake of breath, including my own.

Her mouth just sort of fell open in shock.

The silence was broken when one of the patrons on the patio, a large older black man, said to her "Guess that didn't work out the way you thought it was gonna, huh?"

There was about two seconds of silence and then everybody on the patio just started laughing.

I really thought she was going to hit him. Instead she just turned and stormed off with her friend.

How come everyone here is so quick-thinking, on their feet - while I come up with my brilliant & witty responses a day later, after the fact?

That would be me as well.

My friend, on the other hand, has always had a very quick and biting wit.

I think you made up that 74.625% number. I'm pretty sure it's 81.75%.

I'm not quick thinking, I simply take my lead from Winston Churchhill. I spend a good portion of my riding time thinking up ways to answer questions. Good ones I remember and use, bad ones get thrown out.

While I sound witty to the people present, it's simply an illusion.
