Even other riders give me slack jawed looks when I say I am building a custom bike (supercharged vintage goldwing engine, BMW final drive, sport bike forks, custom frame). I only get annoyed when people say that it can't be done or that I should just buy a new bike instead. Why is it so hard to accept that I want to have a bike that is an expression of who I am and what I can do?

I am using a BMW final drive because it is the easiest way to get the gear ratios that will work with the higher power output of a supercharged engine. The stock honda gl1000 ratio is 3.11:1 while the BMW r1200rt ratio is 2.62:1. Thus helping to reduce the risk of overrevving in lower gears that have plagued supercharged goldwings since the beginning. Another benefit is that cruising rpms will be lower thus taking more advantage of having additional horsepower. It is rather hard to change drive ratios on shaft driven bikes without doing a final drive swap. I am building the frame and swingarm myself so I can make it all fit.

In the first few weeks of owning my FJR, a guy at work asked if he could ride it. "Sure" I said. "Can I sleep with your wife?"

What if he'd said, "Yeah, sure... jump on her!" Would you have let him ride your FJR?
