[QUOTE=whitham_wannabe;19781929]Has anyone tried RC sailing? Seems like a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon, though I fear I may get a bit bored of it after a while ...
I had one long ago. It is more challenging than electric- or nitro-powered boats. It can be an enjoyable time, but it can also get a little boring pretty soon unless there is another sailboater to race with. I never got bored with it though. In the end, I just went on to the next RC toy (helicopters). As with any RC boat, you should have some way of getting out on the water to retrieve it if it stalls, runs out of gas, the battery runs down too far from shore, or in the case of sailboats, tip over. I bought a cheap rubber raft but only had to use it once.

I've been involved in RC sailing since 1995.
The secret to NOT getting bored is to find a local club and find out what boats they are sailing. You will NEVER get bored if there are other boats like yours that you can race against. Competion is competition regardless of speed. Sailing is all about skill, tactics, a decent boat/equipment and a goodly dose of luck. If you get a boat that nobody else sails, I can absolutely guarantee that you WILL get bored very quickly. I have owned and competed with US 1 Meter, Santa Barbara, Marblehead, V-32, Soling 1 Meter and IOM classes. The most enjoyment came from the US 1 Meter class. Good Luck & let us know what you decided to get Regards Bernd |

Picked this one up for $10. It was complete and flyable, but no lipo cut off in the stock receiver/ESC so I upgraded it with a few things from http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/StoreFront

My skyangel panther had a rough one last weekend....flying along and the thing is screaming.....if you have ever flown an edf you know the sound.....anyway, I can't describe the sound but the fan just let go....made a bit of a rough landing did not bust anything but I did split the nose down the middle at the seam.
Dang I love that plane...it is so much flippin fun.....and the sound of the motor will just echo in the trees.....it is so cool.

Been thinking about building a Quad and decided to quit thinking about it and do it. Multirotor is new to me but hopefully the learning curve won't be too steep.
Got all the gear from Value Hobby yesterday and spent a few hours making up the ESC bullets and mounting the motors to my homemade frame. I'll see how it goes!

I was concerned about the weight of the frame....until I mounted the motors. The frame is aluminum with carbon landing "gear", a feather compared to the weight of the motors, 850 kv and 2 oz.
I will get it wired up this weekend if time allows. These things are proven to fly. Like most anything ya just need to learn how. |
