When I was there last year in September, there were very few people on this road until late in the week. I did not see anyone acting stupidly, but I think it was just the luck of the draw. As I took a break at the gas station I did see a couple of semis come through from the Tennessee side. I'd definitely go again but I bet it's a different place on a nice summer weekend.

And if you want to continue discussing/arguing trail braking go ahead and start a new topic for it. Please.

I call it a cluster fuck, wrapped in a FUBAR, surrounded by chaos.

Made the mistake of hitting it on Sunday of Memorial day weekend in 2007 as part of a longer ride of the blue ridge parkway and skyline drive. Ran it once and then got the hell out of there as fast as I could.
In the short span saw two wadded bikes in the weeds, ambulances and wreckers coming and going. Cops every where. Packs of 10-15 bikes all jammed up assholes to elbows behind a slower rider or car. At the gas station near the TOS even had some asshole pull out on his bike with out even looking, had to take evasive action to miss. Can't see how anyone thinks that's fun when it's like that.

FYI, anyone who wants to ride the dragon and hasen't, may want to ride between mid-November and March. The obvious reason is less traffic, but the advantage is no foliage. The Dragon has two heads, one with clear vision through sweepers when leaves are absent (can't help on blind curves), and the other entirely blind sweepers due to heavy foilage. It's truly two entirely different rides.

Plenty of room to get around the rig.
I won't mention what tool you should use in that situation.

(link) Holy crap!

You know a lot of folks here are giving the truckers grief when they should be ragging on Tenn. and NC for not having better signage and enforcement to keep the trucks off that road in the first damn place.
like a sign that says "NO TRUCKS ALLOWED" on each end. It's not like the trucks are going up there for the twisties. They are just trying to make a living getting something delivered to market...yesterday.
I assume by the captions on a picture or two that when I-40 was closed due to the landslide this was the detour.?

Now as to the two wheeled idiots who can't keep it in their lane...I dunno...

I don't buy the "it a public highway" they have the right argument, we restrict tankers from tunnels on interstates, we restrict heavy vehicles from some bridges, we restrict commercial vehicles from parkways, we restrict trucks from the LH lane on interstate hills, we restrict trucks on rural roads "except local deliveries", and the list goes on. No reason except political Bull$hit, that they are not restricted here.
