Not sure if you've figured it out yet, but car tyres flex quite a bit, and can support healthy lean. They have to, due to higher camber angles. Add into the equation any steering angle inclination, which is a product of high caster, and you can get amazing lean on a car tyre and have everything properly designed for handling performance, too. I think it is MGBs that look as if the rear wheels are going to fall off - the camber is such that the outer edges of the tyres to not actually touch the ground when the car is tracking straight. The 2CV posted is another good example of a car that is designed from the start to take advantage of this "unusual" tyre behaviour. I would imagine that the swingarm angle variation over bumps does produce some interesting variations in Ackerman, this would not even register as bump steer in a standard suspension calculation due to the caster being so far positive and there being no camber effect.

Please, get over it. The dark side is only dark in that it's different.

Also, I would imagine that the availablility of snow tyres in car sizes is far, far greater than in bike sizes, so if running a car rim/snow tyre enables him to get more riding miles in, what exactly is he doing wrong? Riding more securely in the cold sounds like a huge win to me.
2cv been around for a long time

just the french making things differently

nothing to do with modern tyres

have had renaults, pugs and a citroen,

a old ds19, just a different way of doing things

like bmw for bikes

cheers

Isn't it cool that the French can do things differently? And not give a flying poop what any one thinks of them?

Actually, for all of the fun people make of French cars, there is a ton of technology that was developed by Citroen that modern vehicles are founded on. His wife machined the first helical gear for him, to cut down on transmission racket. Pretty damn cool.

Ask one of these guys!

Ahhhhh! If we weren't able to chastise others for the choices they make, what fun would our lives be?

To each his own on the tire issue, but to suggest that car tires experience, or are designed to run angles of 30-45 degrees regularly is a stretch for sure.

It's Bush's fault....his administration kept the advantages of car tires on motorcycles a secret to keep us under the thumb of the motorcycle tire manufacturers......it's a conspiracy I tell ya!

If your MGB rear wheels have so much camber that the outer edges of the tires... er... tyres do not actually touch the ground then your rear wheels ARE about to fall off. The MGB had a solid rear axle. Think you are thinking Triumph Spitfire or GT6...

Spitfire!! Yes, thank you for correcting.

Point is that car tyres can handle far more camber than most people want to admit. And if I look at most of the bikes running them, they are not being leaned over by Dave Rainey. They are chilling at about as much lean as the front end of a Chrysler 300 hits when you parallel park it. It's not nearly the compromise everyone makes it out to be.

I also wonder about stones and glass houses on this topic - which of the loudest even bother with real snows or proper summers?
