Question: what was wrong with Deals Gap, 226A, NC28, Buck Creek Gap, Shady Valley?

answer: it didn't lend itself to someone's business advertising

question: why do we (as riders) continue it and give them free advertising?

I agree with you completely. I never found anything wrong with calling the Gap US129.

I agree completely. Silly names for roads just to sell T shirts has been one of my pet peeves. Just to make things worse, some roads have more than one name, for example: Moonshiner 28 and Hellbender 28

And lets not forget The Rattler/Shiner's run....both the same road.

I always refer to 129 at Deal's Gap as Deal's Gap, just like I always have for over 20 years. Now when I say that I often get a blank look and I have to say "It's commonly know as "the Dragon" by the tourists"

Careful guys, I am sensitive.

Besides, without all the publicity, there wouldn't be so many squids, cruisers, Miatas, etc. Then Killboy would not be taking all these pictures, and we wouldn't have this thread. Without this thread we would probably be bored, and would not have learned soooo much about the right way to ride US129/Deal's Gap.

And it keeps people away from the fine roads of Appalachia

Then they'd migrate en-masse to Apalachicola. No-win situation.

sorry
if one of my pet peeves got you all butt hurt, try rubbing some analgesic cream on it.

seriously, not taking shots at you specifically, but I don't like the businesses renaming something, then all the tourists think that's how it should be referred to.

US129 was Deals gap when I went there to ride in the '70's, nobody would have had a clue what the tail of the dragon was.

Then the old esso station and motel were bought and they turned a great road into a fricking circus to build the "motorcycle resort's" business.

And we got squids galore, cruisers clogging the road, a 30 mph limit, pulloffs every 100 ft for the Tenn patrol to radar you .... what a deal

ok rant over

Though I don't have the 40 year experience on the road like you do, I have been there a couple times. I agree that the road is over traveled, but I think there are better ways to look at it:

1. I've met some cool people at the 'resort' (never stayed there), and watched some pretty cool mini racing in the parking lot.
2. All the hype surrounding the dragon ultimately leaves the surrounding roads all but empty.
3. The moto tourism business in the area generally creates one of the friendliest motorcycle cultures I've experienced. It isn't common in almost any other part of the country to have cars voluntarily pull over to let you pass. It happens routinely in this part of TN/NC.
4. Tourists, whether riders or drivers, make significant contributions to the local economies....business and tax revenue.
